Just went to HAW last night. Â Dan was very generous as always, and I brought home 8 gorgeous discus for the first time. Â I am a little nervous about keeping them healthy, but Dan always takes the time to explain how to take care of them.
I got 2 blue diamonds, 2 leopard, 2 golden sunrise and 2 pigeon discus - they are so pretty in my tank!
Seriously - when I first got into keeping aquariums, my boyfriend said: no discus - they are too expensive, and are hard to take care of. Â
I didn't mind because I had never seen pretty discus - a lot of the ones you find in the stores are peppered and dull colored. Â But from the first time I walked into HAW, I fell in love with the bright colors. Â I am so excited to finally have some of my own. Â
I hear he is getting a big shipment in next week! Â I think some really pretty red and black ones are coming in on that shipment!
The old story that discus are hard to keep is changing. Due to improved filtering systems and the abundance of tank raised fish you will find they are not that tough. I have found big tanks with outstanding filtration and large regular (in my case weekly) water changes will reward you with hours of enjoyment. I have 15 2"- 41/2" in a 135...they are an absolutely beautiful FW fish.
And Dan is a great resource and is always available for assistance.
