My wife and I were unsure of how the club would handle outings? We would love to spend a day at the zoo and get to checkout behind the scenes. Is there a date yet?

Still not a date yet. I'm trying to get a head count to inform my contact. Like I said before, I do not want to plan for 30 people and only 5 show up. So when the date is set, it's on.

I think I'd be interested. Without making any wild claims, I'd be curious to see if all the local clubs could eventually each sponsor a tank.

The reason is that I went last week to the zoo and ALL the tanks were in bad shape. I think maybe with a coordinated group effort of volunteers, we could really make those tanks stand-out, and make that aquarium a real destination.

I was just really disappointed to see all of South America crammed into one tall 200 gallon tank, with lighting so poor that the 10+ Discus could NOT be seen without pressing your face against the glass. They looked miserable. Their tankmates? 1 Sterbai Cory Catfish, and some Cardinal Tetra. Really Disappointed.

However, I was MOST disappointed in the combined African 300 gallonish tank which has a few peacocks, and Mbuna - which was to represent all of Tanganyika, Malawi, and Victoria. I could understand combining Malawi and Victoria, but there is SO much life in Tanganyika that it could have a 1000 gallon tank and still not be enough variation of life we have in our tanks just here in Houston.

So, I'm not ragging on the zoo because I know they have limited funds and depend a lot on donations and volunteer effort, but I hope maybe GHAC and some of the other clubs could find a way to help them make that aquarium something to brag about.

Just some random thoughts on the subject...

Jeebus, thats an awesome idea man! I was thinking about getting zoo memberships, for the hubby ane me and the kids, how cool would it be to help with stuff like lights, and donating fish! Even tank maintenance would be fine!

If you find out anything, let me know!

We've got memberships now. They're a great investment that quickly pay for themselves. I'm not sure who to talk to about volunteering however.

I'm somewhat hesitant to even bother though because in my experience, EVERY time I've ever volunteered to help with something for an organization, they usually just wants to abuse my eagerness and turn me into their pack mule.
