  • GHAC at the beach

Join the Greater Houston Aquarium Club for a day of fun in the sun and sand Sunday May 1, 2011 at Quintana Beach in Freeport Texas. Bring your friends and family. If you wish to go collecting for brackish (including very light brackish which is almost freshwater) or saltwater critters, or go fishing/crabbing, you will need a current fishing license that is valid for saltwater.
    General Directions:

Please see below post for exactly how to get there.

Keep in mind Quintana is a public family beach.

    Time and more details TBA.

Ok. I keep looking at the map, and it does not look right. I go to this place at least once a year SO please follow these directions:
Take 288 South and stay on it, do not exit anywhere (DO NOT TAKE 288 business) Its about an hour drive from the 610 South Loop.
Before 288 ends, you will pass by a Krogers on the right and a convenience store on the left.
When 288 ends, the road will veer to the left and merge with Hwy 36, follow along.
You will see a waterway on both sides of the road. The water here is very lightly brackish and is loaded with blue crab and killifish of various types. The best place is near the end of the road you will see a gravel bank on both sides of the road. There are also three concrete tubes allowing the water to flow under the street. This should be our first stop. We can meet here around 10 am and stay until 11:30-12 noon. if this place is not already taken by other people crabbing.
If you continue forward on this road for another block you will reach an intersection, turn right (FM 1495). Continue forward toward Quintana Beach.
When you see the sign for Quintana Beach, there will be one last road that intersects, turn right (Quintana RD) and you will see sand dunes on your left.
This road will take you between two large tidal pools, loaded with Killies, Mollies, crab, perch, gobies and many other critters. If you go just a little further you can bee the beach. This will be the second meeting place. You are welcome to bring a grill. There are porta-potties near by for your convenience. If you like fishing, I have caught trout and flounder there before and you will have all the live bait you need from the tide pools if you desire. If you are confused by any of this, please send me a pm.

This was the confusing part: The signs all say Quintana Beach, BUT yahoo local has it labeled as Bryan Beach. Follow the above directions and you will be fine.

I will try to make it since I could find some critters for my SW tank. Maybe some food too.

I learned from cichlid1409, that if any sargassum weed is present in the water, if you carefully inspect it, you may find small shrimp, amphipods, isopods, nudibranchs, snails, anemones, and spider crabs.

...and it's likely that the sargassum will still be in.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

Also if you need feeders, ghost shrimp are in high abundance in brackish water.

I taught this trick to Trinity! Anything to cure her from going, "Ahh! Seaweed's all over! Ew!" Now she knows what cool little guys you can find if you look carefully.

Lots of baby critters in there. Learned that at Sea Camp when I was little.

So, for those going, we can collect a bunch of sargassum, put in a bucket and see who wants to take home what.

                      Less than a month away . . .
                      Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.
