Re: GHAC - Comments and like Chatter Thread

    Dave,

It sounds like you are trying to put a bandaid on the problem.  It will take more than you and Fishlady to turn things around for HAS.  I'm curious, does HAS already have a "Welcoming Committee"?

I thought of joining a couple years back when I first heard about HAS.  I was dissapointed with the website as well.  It had a nice section giving a brief history of HAS, and a alright classified section....needs work.  The rest doesn't get updated from what I can tell.  Overall, the only thing I really know HAS for is for hosting FOTAS and its Auctions.  I went to the last auction, it was my first.  It was organized, but never saw anywhere that I would have to wait for my money for things I sold at auction.  I guess it makes sense, but it should be posted somewhere for the sellers.

I'm getting off track, I ended up joining the LHA club.  The meetings have structure and even some workshops, but they are fun.  I call it my mini vacation.  The meeting at Mikes was along the same lines.  Dave, that was a cheap shot you gave about Friday's meeting.    That wasn't even a meeting for the new club, and Mike's place is still work in progress.

The new club will have structure, and eventually will offer speakers, trips, and yes even auctions.  There will be many appealing aspects to the new club, a club which it seems others hobbyist are interested in.

We are not looking for a war with HAS.  There can be two clubs co-existing.  I think the reason there will be two clubs is HAS fault for not  meeting the needs of the people and just assuming that the people will not have a alternative choice.  My justification for this comment is in the "Greater Houston Aquarium Club" thread.

I think HAS should have welcomed GHAC or any new club that promotes the Fish Keeping Hobby.  If they make it as a club, great and if not, then that's ok too.

        Mike,

I'm sorry I came to the meeting, I should have known that it would be really hot if I was there.

I'll try to cover more skin next time and wear a coat.

As I recall, Scott said that the auction bidding number would be free to any dues paying members if we ever did any auctions... I think that's what he said...

I don't think this new club wants to beat up the HAS, but maybe this new club can provide that learning atmosphere for beginners like me. I don't understand a lot of the technical terms that a lot of breeders and more experienced people use, and sometimes it's a little frustrating trying to keep up. At the get-together the other night, everyone was sharing tips and tricks and just answering basic questions without getting annoyed. It was kinda nice not feeling so dumb about being so dumb. LOL!

Re: GHAC - Comments and like Chatter Thread

Dave is frustrated. Simple as that. A very few people in each club put out a tremendous amount of effort. You'll learn that. I'm not the president. Insofar as the financial data--we have it available at every general meeting and every board meeting. You dont have to be a member to attend. HAS has been around for over 50 years. Many clubs have come and gone. It's not about a competition. HAS has spun off several clubs in the past. Plans are a good thing to have....let's see if all of these people stick with it. For the people who don't like the 25% club take in the auction, please peruse the web a bit and see what all the other clubs do. Or, alternatively, take the fish to your local fish store and see if you make better money. I think you know the answer to that one. If you're trying to make money on fish at an auction, you don't truly understand the purpose to my way of thinking. It's a way to facilitate sharing with other hobbyists and defray expenses. I try not to comment on specifics of other clubs for one main reason: I don't know them. If you've attended some of the HAS events in the last couple of years, you have a leg to stand on. Otherwise, it's just griping. Rob has a leg to stand on. He's right. We are weak in areas. And we'd love to fix that. It's just a shame that more people don't help. But that's not just unique to our club. Sorry this was done in such a "stream of consciousness" fashion.

I think all the talk about "pants" is what made that night so hot.....regardless I didn't see anyone leave cause it was too hot so obviously the enviroment was pleasing enough for all of us to toture ourselves in the scorching heat of a fish store.

Re: GHAC - Comments and like Chatter Thread

Its unfortunate that there isnt enough people in HAS that put out a tremendous amount of effort. seriously. However I honestly dont think the GHAC will have the same problem. I think the financial information should be available to browse without being seen to be browsing it. Its not about getting rich off the auctions, but that extra 25% that HAS keeps could surely make the hobby less expensive.

Also with LFS, you can trade fish in and you get your money/store credit the same day. I think Raul has a point, id have been hanging around after the last auction for my cheque if id have sold something. It should have been posted.
