  • Breeder Awards Points

There has been talk of starting a Breeder Awards Points (BAP) program for the club. Anyone interested?

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Here is something along the lines of what I was thinking:

      I'm open to ideas though.

Exactly, except that the club I belonged to in MI would have their top point people turning in red zebras for points when they already had like 2000 points for mbuna. I was like, "What is the point? You're not impressing me with red zebras."

Honestly, I think there are pros and cons to it. With a large, active club that is constantly able to introduce new species/variants, has a good representative points system, and a system that also rewards long-term care, I think it would be good. Really, what I'd like to see happening in these programs is people challenging themselves to try to raise more difficult or rare species as they progress through the ranks. The breeding points program should never be the focal point of the club, but simply one aspect of the club in which people can participate. . .

Now, one thing I did like, was that this type of thing spawned other programs, like the "Fry Raising" program. If someone had a bunch of fry for one species, they would donate them to the Fry Raising program (you could also have a system where the participants paid for the fry). People would sign-up, then on a set date, they would receive the fry (all from the same spawning at a club meeting). After a specified date, they would bring in their best one or two fish, and the club would vote on which they thought were the best.
Tell your boss you need to go home to take care of your "cichlids." It sounds an awful lot like "sick kids." )

I'm game for this. I think it will be something we need to discuss at a meeting. From my understanding, the most "successful" way of doing the breeder points is to have a scale. Also depending on the base currency, you could set breeding at a given value. Things like Mbuna or guppies would be a 1, but another more difficult fish would be worth 5 points, and rare/never before bred fish would be something much higher. I've also seen bonus points given for documentation of the breeding from start to finish.

sounds interesting if it applies to inverts and plants too? although i dont breed critters much, they occasionally grow out if no one eats them so it wouldnt take much just to get me to foster them better lol. i do agree that we, as hobbyists, have a duty to minimize the effects of out hobby on wild populations. the other aspect is that we can sometimes prevent a species from disappearing from the trade altogether. i have seen far too many herps go that route

What about points for creating hybrids, getting 2 different fish to breed while doing it for purpose of combining their good traits together

I like this idea and its a manner in which to promote and teach about breeding in our somewhat difficult Houston water. Seeing successes and how those results were achieved can give many the insight into other similar species and can be a fun challenge to many who do enjoy that aspect of the hobby. I would like to see plants and inverts as well, given that aspects growing interest. Something to discuss indeed at a meeting, but I'm in!!!
