Where can I catch ghost shrimp? But it sounds like fun

i catch ghost shrimp in the creek behind my house all the time lol. i have a 45g tank with 6 jade sleeper gobies and some type of native killifish (about 5 inches, ugly silver w/ no markings at all, and kinda mean.) all these fish hide in oak bark caves all day, except for feeding time (fun!) and territorial displays by the male gobies at night. i would like to add some native color and movement to the rest of the water column! i'm thinking maybe some type of smaller sunfish? let me know when, i'll bring my nets! i love catching the small shrimps and aquatic insects from the creek, but haven't had much luck with fish, although i know there are big boys out there because i see them splash in the deeper sections...

I actually had some Jade Sleepers in with my Blackstripes and they did quite well together, especially with the killis hovering directly below the waterline. As for sunfish, maybe a Flier or anther of the smaller species found locally... Hmmm.... If you could post up a pic of the Killi I could try and identify it. Some larger Sailfin mollies might add some color to the tank as well or even a Grass Pickerel....

I think early spring will garner the best results, especially for killifish and things that would work for a native tank. I'm thinking we will host the March GHAC meeting at our place and go collecting earlier that day. I'll try and hit 3-4 different spots with species in focus at each and varying biotopes.

Any place I can catch a lesser siren (salamander)?

Mmmm, I have caught lesser sirens and Amphiumas both locally. They are uncommen in both regards and its really been just dumb luck on my behalf. I can say that on those occasions I have captured both in overgrown still water streams. I have 2 different spots in mind for the collection trip that qualify as that sort of area.

How does March 16th sound for a day for this collection trip? Perhaps meeting up at my place up in Spring around 1-2pm in the afternoon and visiting 3-4 places in the local Spring area. Afterwards, we can collect some photographs and collection data for the specimens at our place and host the GHAC meeting that evening.

Out of the 2 salamanders mentioned, the siren would make a better pet. Amphiumas tend to be aggressive and have razor sharp teeth.

Indeed, its just been a few years since I caught one myself (3-total) in Texas. I have seen them far more frequently in my field trips through La., but I rarely get many chances to go. Hopefully we'll find one this collection trip!
