Why do you want to separate him? I think it can be done, but I would provide much more than just an under gravel filter on there like he's got.

Obviously if it worked for Alex's store setup, it will work. But do you really want to make that a permanent home for the guy?

Is he messing with the FOAI too much?

My biggest concern would be if you ever wanted to mix him with other fish, that he would be a holy terror if you kept him in that 40 gallon for years, or in your case a couple months till the next flavor of the month arrived. A complete Hellion!!

I would prolly go get a 90 or 110 xtall and let him settle in that.. give him the space.. It would only be another foot of wall space, but it would give him more running room. Else wait for like a 150 to become available and put him in there.. and maybe pick up a couple of ladies for him to talk to :) :) :) :) I dont know enough about Petro's so its your call !

I have seen petros in smaller set ups...

Anyway you could make that a regular 40? That way he has at least 4 foot to run.

I have seen a 3 foot tank done long term... and yes, for a red bulu. He was happy... and when let into a larger tank was not a terror.

LOL, he would become an unsociable murderer......worst than John's infamous "Cool Hand Luke."

IMO, it's way doable. Might have to stay that way forever like Geoff noted above but doable.
