  • no algae yet...??? I dont get it...unless they are eating it before I can see it. yep female I guess. I removed most of the nerite snails to see if that helps get more algae growth. I had about 12 of them in there and they can REALLY clean some rocks quick.

I have read of two reported claims that male tropheus may hold eggs. No pictures or video has been produced.

      EK was one of those.

Vent the fish and take pictures/video.

If they are sharing the burden of breeding in this way....then you are seeing a major evolutionary step in tropheus right before your eyes.

It's the petros bro. They really cleans things up if you have good numbers of them.

          • yeah, old MH don't really do anything but heat up your water.

New lights whether it be CF, T5, VHO, or MH will be a big difference compared to used ones.

+1, i replaced my used mh bulbs for new 15k's and wow, within 3 days, everything was covered in algae.

              although that tank busted

so now, im waiting for algae to startup in my newer tank.
i figure with 500watts of mh light it shouldnt be long

                    • fine with me...as long as they are breeding again. They just took the month of september off from mating...not sure why though. during september I had one female showing a mouthful but that disappeared about two days later. now I got two holding! good to know things are back in order.

                      • should take about a month for algae to start plus it also depends on a number of other things other than light

you also have to be quick during water changes otherwise it will dry out and die believe me it does not take a long time for it to dry out, you might get white patches on your back wall where it dies

second thing is how often you do water changes = removing nutrients

third thing those trophs will keep it mowed like a baseball field don't expect anything longer than a 1/8"

fourth about after 4-6 months you will get this brown/dark green algae and they prefer the green stuff but it still looks cool!

its cool sometimes I will see like 6 of them side by side, work there way up and down a wall in sequence its pretty cool!

This same thing happens with half the colonies of tropheus I ever had.

They would breed really good for a month or two and then than a month for two off. Than they will breed again. Just a normal cycle.

                              • I added 13 petros...12 Rainbow macros and 1 polyodon that will be removed shortly. other than that...everything is the same. no real aggression so far...im keeping a close eye on them though.
