by far, the best vids I've seen on here. nice job!

now, how do you combat all that hard algae on the glass? I've found that glass scrapers and razor blades work best, but I'm always looking for better (easier) ways...

          Thanks Peter.

The algae actually is not that hard. I can usually handle it with a quick swipe from a metal pro scraper. I stopped using razor blades since I never seemed to be careful enough to not scratch the glass. There is a magnet scraper on each tank - and I hardly ever use them unless my son wants to help.

To me the best algae scraper is a petro. Seriously, it is the only reason I would want them back in the tank instead of just having their own tank.

BTW, cutting the light period helps. It does not get as thick on the glass with less lighting.

The kind of hard algae that I get is primarily in one of my petro tanks (famula chimba and red fin longola) and they don't put a dent in it. I can see where my nerites have made a path through it but they're not enough either. Elbow grease and scrapers are the only solution. I guess it's the MH's :) although I've already cut back the lighting period quite a bit.

Is it hard green algae? That is what I use to get in my plant tanks when I used MHs. Spotted hard green algae. And you are right, elbow grease and a good scraper.

What's your lighting period? I reviewed mine again and it's 7 to 9 or 10 and 6 to 8 M-F (4 or 5 hours) and 7 to 8 (13 hours) on the weekend. And this is only with 2 bulbs (108Ws).

4p to 11p :) There's my problem! :) I get home around 5 or 6 and I like my lights on when I'm around. Plus, the good algae growth is what I'm aiming for for my petros to graze on.... although the MTS is getting so out of hand that stuff is almost non-existant! One thing at a time......

Peter, get a collander and sift out your sand and what is left would be the snails. Also get some botias from Dan. They work great. OR get the snail eating fish that John hasin his pond. they are real nice..

Software Name: iMovie (part of the Ilife Suite)

I removed about 90% of my gravel to get the MTS out. Then sifted it outside with a net. It's a time consuming process but it cut down on the MTS a lot. MY next route may be copper but it is not near as bad as it once was, and I like have MTS in the tank since it's now mostly sand.
