Read as many articles as you can find, and books your willing to buy. Ask lots of questions here in this forum, and seek advice.

With a 175 gallon tank, I would either have 2 large canisters (Eheim 2262, Eheim 2080, or Fluval FX5) or I would have a wetdry rated for 200 gallon tank, and a pump and over flow to go with it capable of 1200 gph. I would also get atleast 1 jet pump for circulation.

Look at tons and tons of pictures on the internet to figure out which variant you want to keep.

When you make that choice, post here, and you;ll have about 50 people what to do next or where to find them.

Your crazy to try and get into Trophs man. They are addicting as all get out, and you'll miss your other fish at times....

I have my colony of f1 tropheus moori golden kazumba, 23 fish total, allof which were under .5" tl when I got them. They are over 1" tl now, and it's only been 1.5 weeks. I do 2x 75% water changes every week. There's also a wc 7+" male petrochromis polyodon in the tank. I am running 2x eheim 2217's, 1x koralia 4, 1x koralia 3, and 4x 48" t12 40 watt lights 2x 10,000k's and 2x 6700k's. My fish are growing like crazy and are extremy active and showing great color! So yeah, it can be done and done well many different ways.

Also, I don't use a carbon bottle for my wc's, I just add double the reccomended dose of prime.

So let me see.. just to make 250% clear...
Carbon filter REMOVES ALL THE STUFF FROM THE WATER, prime / amquel etc.. add stuff to the water and the harmful stuff is converted to un-harmful stuff... STILL LEAVING STUFF IN YOUR WATER and Newb you +1'd that ?????????

Now on a completely related topic to make you all feel better.

Now that I use a carbon bottle when adding water.. have you ever seen WC Tropheus attempt to spawn while you are adding fresh chlorinated water which you have added prime to ??

I have seen my fish spawning in the crystal clear carbon filtered water while nothing but that is running. Please remember that Prime / Amquel etc... will remove O2 from the water while it dechlorinates...

I will show you everytime that carbon filtered water is better than any water you can add... I have had comments since I changed to Carbon filtered water "how do you get your water so crystal clear.. I cannot get close to that" and I have to agree with them.. Crystal clear water comes from the fact that stuff is removed from the water column...

Sorry for being so blunt.. I hope you all can forgive me

they spawn while i fill my 210 EVERY time I do water changes...I mean my hands are in the tank and they are still dancing. And they are WC as well. Im not saying that Carbon is bad...just not manditory. personally I would like to swith over to carbon bottle but not for clear water...just for comfort levels in case of hurricane again I dont want to be caught off guard by the city adding things to the water without me knowing. as far as O2 is concerned, its true what you say, but I dont shut off any of my filters with doing a water change so the amount of water splashing in the tank is more than enough O2 for them. this last thing is a question and not a statement, but isnt clear water from the amount of beneficial bacteria you have in your filters?

I as well see mines dance right after a water change, and I don't have a carbon bottle. But those API stress coats are expensive when I'm doing 2x water changes a week. I think a carbon bottle is a good investment.

I do think a carbon bottle is a great idea and probably a better solution, but Jepser you still add dechlorinator to the tank dont you? I thought I saw you do so that night. I may be mistaken on that. Sorry...

BUT...just like Randal, I dont turn off any filter, and I waterchange till the very point when a filter is about to choke out on me, then refill.

If I want to go lower than that, I turn off the filter and add a powerhead to the very bottom.

                          Works good too!!

More than one way to skin a cat. I do think Carbon Bottle is a improvement simply because it absorbs your contiminents and they stay in the bottle. Just make sure you change out your carbon once in a while.

+1 My fish dance while I'm performing a water change, also. I don't use a carbon bottle either. I wouldn't mind trying one though... just to see if the water is that much clearer.

I don't know about the clarity of water in a tank, but when you compare just straight tap water and tap water filtered through a carbon bottle or similar apparatus, it's uncanny. :)
