  • Tropheus Tank setup questions - 65 gallon 36"x18"x25"

First off i will introduce myself, my name is nick and joined the tropheus club a while back. When i fist got into tropheus i started out with some chimba reds i picked up off a dude named willie, then added in some red rainbows and some moops. I am still very new to the tropheus though i had great success with the chimbas. Due to my cousin i sold off my colony and began reefing. I kept several reef tanks successfuly, and then lost an entire tank (thousands in corals and fish). I since then have set my sights back to fresh water, and started out with flowerhorns of wich now live in my pond. I currently have three dovii, but am itching to get my hands on some tropheus.

Now if your still here with me, i have some questions. I have a 65 gallon tank 18x36x25, and am wondering what i might be able to keep. I am not opposed to upgrading later as i am looking for fry to start out with. My filtration on tank is 2x emporer 400, and a ehiem 2036. My question's are:

    1. What would be a good number for this tank size?
    2. Is my filtration adequate?
    3. Does anyone have fry of the following, birchardi ujiji, moops, rainbows (any color), gold kazumbas?
    4. Would a pair of birchardi's hurt to be in tank, also shell dwellers, and calvus?

I have been lurking on here for a while and i am very impressed with the comrodary and usefull tips and fry list. Please take the time to school this newb and help me get back in the game.

Dang no advice... SSSprelude answered the first two questions, but what about the tankmates. I am more prone to the shell dwellers. I might add to that i am a religiouse water changer...

Geoff may be able to help you on Ujiji. Moops, wait a few weeks. Troph fry can't really defend themselves I would keep them all alone.

          Thanks for the replys guys...

If i did 20 or so, what would you suggest time wise to upgrade, obviously they wouldnt last for ever in a 65. Also i was reading in some older posts that you make wet drys. Would it be possible to section off a smaller tank to make one. I dont have a whole lot of room under the stand, was thinking maybe a 10 or regular 20g. Would that work and also at that point could i do away with the emp. 400's to allow the overflow box on tank?

I would not keep Tropheus in 36" length tank for any real length of time unless they were fry/juvinile fishes.

I would get a 55 gallon tank and get about 15 fish.

Then move up to a 75 gallon when you got the funds and up your group about 18-20 fish maximum.

The filtration you have is adequate for that tank size, you got about 1000gph filtration.

I am out of Ujiji fry right now, but there is moop fry on the horizon from others. I also have some Red Rainbow fry I can hook you up with in about 2 weeks, but its only 5 fish.

With fry I would be careful of tankmates, personally a colony of Tropheus does not really make good tank mates for about much of anything other than other Trophs or other tribe topheini.

The Calvus may have a hardtime with such agressive eaters as Trophs. The Brichardi would most likely be fine, but in a 3ft tank your going to be crammned.

I have seen Calvus work with Trophs if there is alot of rock work and the Tropheus group is minimal small colony 10-12 fish.

But Tropheus colonies are prone to problems when less than 15-20 fish depending on variant except for Duboisi. Duboisi can go as low as 8-10 fish no problem as long as ratio is 1:1 or better in favor of females. Dont be male heavy.
