Hello everyone, I got a question on keeping a bristle nose in tank with tropheus. I have done this over a year and half now with no problems my question is when I purchased him the aquarium store told me he "must have wood of some sort to survive" so I put a piece of african wood just small piece maybe 9'' by 5'' flat but the tropheus love it more then he does. They graze on it and nibble etc...... I had a Chilanga swell up last year like golf ball I put in 10 gallon tank and medicated waited it out and after week swelling disapeared and there was small piece of wood size of ink pen tip in bottom of bare tank that he had passed. Well this hasn't happened since but I recently went bare bottom and am seeing few pieces of wood now and then just worried this may happen again. Now to my question any of you have bristle nose pleco with no wood doing good? Do I have to have wood in tank for this bristle nose to survive? He hangs in the rocks 99% of time any how. Thanks sorry so long. Chris

the only plecos that NEED wood are panaques and farlowellas.
and a few others, but bristle nosers arent one of them.
they prefer it, as they occassionally graze on it and it helps keep them regular, but aside from that, they really dont have to have it.FRENCH FRY!!!

My Royal line Pleco eats the wood in the tank.. my gold nugget couldn't care less for it. Then again in Nature the royal line lives around bogwood but the golden nugget lives in the fast streams and rivers of the Brazilian waters that let into the Amazon. The golden nugget likes water movement.

I keep bristlenose plecos in just about every one of my tanks and love them.
They do great. I would highly recomend getting females, because the males usuall get their brisstles mowed down by the Petros and Trophs.380G For Sale $3000 Acrylic tank & stand
