  • Golden Chilambo - Post your thoughts & opinions

Any thoughts about this variant? How common are they? Does anyone have pic of theirs they could post?

A guy in my club, who's been trying, unsuccessfully, to sell his colony of ~30 WC, approached me with an offer that is hard to refuse. He needs the tank they're in for Discus and no one will buy the colony. So he wants to give them to me under the condition I give him fry...(I don't know how many nor when, and I"ll iron out those details before commiting) If he doesn't flake out, I'd say I should do it!
I only have a 75 open. Here're my thoughts about what to do: take out all but one male and sell/trade the other males (except for one back up in another tank). Because thirty seems like a large number to put in a 75. I think they're in a 100 + tank now.

I'm trying not to get too excited but I kinda can't help it.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Jenney.

Contact Jesper (zulaab) he has a colony that he can share pics with.

BTW Jesper we need updated pictures.

I will post the link to where he stashed his pictures for you.

The fish is very uncommon, but the color of yellow is very similiar to Linangu, Musanga, etc.. and other all yellow rainbow styled fishes.

Nice looking fishes. Love the plum face mask. I have seen them from time to time on import lists. I wouldn't consider them "rare" compared to some other tropheus. Back in 07/08 they were showing up as a 'NEW' variant on a number of importer stock lists. They are also not listed in the aqualog and this might be why. There was some debate if these fishes were actually new or just the tropheus linangu going by another name. It has been pointed out that the latter fish has more purple-maroonish color on the top part of their body. Now, most will consider them as their own variant. I know some current owners in Europe, Oz, and the states.

I was thinking they looked like a washed out (facial colour) linangu, too.

I really hope this dude doesn't back out. He backed out of someone buying them about 3 months ago for $350. he said he couldn't part with them because he paid alot more than that. Now he's giving them away. Good for me, not so the person he shined or himself.

Thanks for the time to answer.

There is more green in a Chilambo and more Red (plum color) in the body of a linangu.
These are the only real difference I see..
Linangu also has stripes across the bridge of the face which I dont see that one extra stripe in the Chilambo (again minor differences)
In suit (ie when you are looking at the alpha male) they look close, but once they start getting to their breeding suit (ie the yellow spot starts to show clearly) then you see the differences again -- see the last two pictures I posted.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post those.
Spoke to the guy via email just now and it seems to still be on. Should be getting them "early next week".

Also, got 37 fry off the Ilangi females today in my first forray into stripping. Had a few rough spots (getting poked by a fin or three, fish flying out of my hand and onto the floor, one got chomped by mama and died, and didn't get all of em from two females.) but it was my first time and It'll be easier next time now that I know a little more as far as what to expect and how to have stuff set up.

Easiest way when stripping personally is to have a bucket ready and a floating net inside of the bucket... I pull the fish out and put my thumb and index finger over the top of the female on her gills... while holding her face first into the floating net and the remaining body outside of the water I start pumping her gills for her GENTLY.. shortly after starting she is going to start giving up her gold.. and once she figures out what it is you are doing.. the rest come out quick...
Once she stops... keep going for a couple of more because once there is plenty of space in there she will keep holding them for a while.
As soon as you are satisfied.. I dump her right back into the bucket next to the net.. If she attempts to jump and somehow you dont have a good grip on her.. she falls into the bucket.. this is why I do it this way.

That's because I'm from Texas, dahlink!!
Granted, I haven't been home (San Antonio) since 1995, but it's where I learned English.
Atlanta metro area is pretty civilized for the south. Sorry fish scene aside...But venture out into the country side? ooooofffftahhh. (as they say in Minnesota)
I've seriously considered moving back to the Mother Land. But just thinking about moving my 125's gives me ulcers. I wouldn't even want to think about moving all my fish. I would go bald from the stress.

                              You've made my day.
