You need to consider also the expansion and growth of the colony as your young fry mature.

I have 10 Dubs in a 42 Hex!!!!!!!!!!! No problems-no aggression at all. No fin damage, minimal aggression all very healthy, In fact, saw a little shakin and bakin the other day.
Using an U/G filter with powerheads turned up to create turbulence with top water line and an Eheim 2217 I think?
I do have to look after the gravel when doing my w/c's because there is not much gravel surface area in a Hex.
You can keep tropheus all kinds of ways in all kinds of tanks. The rules you read about are general statements design to help the novice get a handle on keeping these fishes. In no way are those rules written in stone.
I read a number of reports where a trio of dubs were able to breed long term as a group. Doesn't mean it's the best thing to do with them. I would still recommend they be keep in a 75g 4 foot minimum. They totally act different when they get the room to spread their fins and swim around some.
