  • Reasons for Quarantine fish - Tropheus at LFS

I know its best to quarantine fish after a purchase. Well just wondering If any of yall had any problems with any Tropheus from Extreme and its not to hate I just wanna know if its just me. I saw a couple of WC ikola with bloat and I imediatley let him know so he imediatley took it out.

I have seen some sickly ones in there every once in a while....definately quarantine ANY fish before it goes into your colony.

Always quarantine! Way too much $ to gamble with. Why take the chance of infecting a healthy established colony. Just be sure your quarantine tank has as good or better water quality you keep in main tank-frequent partial water changes!

I try to not even buy tropheus from there.

        I can't remember seeing a tank that didn't have a sick tropheus.
I ate my fish that died.

Always, always always QT new fish. At least one month.
Had I done that I would not have lost 13 WC Ilangi and 24 F1 and WC moops. Bill can tell you, it was horrible and he held my cyber-hand thru the whole thing.
I know everyone has their own view on pre-emptive treatment with metro, but I do it. I also feed metro soaked food for their first two feedings.
And I wouldn't buy any of the fish that were in the tank with the bloat fish.
          All the best,
          Jenney.

Yea this is my first year into trophs and learned so much from what I've done. I had my first Colony of Red Moilro that I"ve purchased from another guy then bought some more from Xtreme and 2 weeks later the ones that were purchased from Extreme had bloat, but surprisingly the ones that were'nt purchased from Extreme had survived. My second big colony are the Red Rainbows and from what I've learned I havent lost a fish yet, well knock on wood.

The key is ALWAYS QT fish even if they come from your best friend.

You just never really know how well they will adjust to what you got going on.

I purchased a couple Duboisi from Troung and not had a problem. Most retailer's I think have problems with Trophs and Petro's because they might have the experience (they the owners), but not all their employee's They dont realize the water quality and food quality being so critically important.

                  +1

I've seen that in a few different LFS. The owners are great fish keepers but the hired help couldnt care less, its just a way to pay the bills. I've never QT'd a fish before and thank the Fish Gods I haven't had any problems. I want to start a QT tank but I dont really know exactly what that means....
