After brooding for a while and listening, watching, brooding some more and then doing a whole lot of thinking... I have come to some conclusions that may or may not be substantiated. but here goes
I have had my Petro. Trews breed several times now and in each set of circumstances, have not been able to really step in and do anything to strip the female of the eggs or fry. I have noticed that the females behavior changed dramatically after the spawning and some of the females behavior stay changed for up to about the 5th day... One was up to the 7 day.
Sooooo in the same tank.... I had several Ikola's holding and demonstrating similar behavior change
Now what was really interesting was the feeding and the female behavior. While the holding females for the most part did not eat, they sure were interested. The Mob behavior of all the others was just quite intense and all the fish (including the holding females) got into it..... even if the holding females did not eat with the same intensity.
That is the first thing I noticed and got to thinking....
The next thing I noticed was that the female to be holding and then holding, often times protected her area... a turf, if you will, An area that was often times crowded with other females and the lone sub male. The other females were surly fussy, liplockers, hussies and just down right in your face type attitude with the holding females.
That is the 2nd thing I noticed and it also made me think... ( my head is hurting now)
The last go around in spawning, I noticed one smaller female really holding on for dear life. Think of the screaming kid in the playground holding on to the swing as the sister pushes higher and higher and the kid slips and lets go and goes flying... Thats the type of holding the smallest female trew was doing.
Then one of the other females kept trying to lock lips..... and kept at it for most of two days until the smallest female held no longer..
So three things.... ( have a migraine now)
In taking consideration of these things... Should I really take the tank and build one hundred one caves type structures with lots of pvc, whiffle balls, bio balls and to heck with the looks...because obviously in the wild... the holding female probably holds the first time or second time she spawns....
Anddddd the holding female can run away to safety...
Andddddd the other females will most likely give up trying to get to her (for the most part)
Andddddd out of sight out of mind
Andddddd can get food at a leisure pace
Anddddddd I still have a migraine
Soooooo I know some feed constantly.... Who is it that feeds some 22 times a day??? I wonder if their females hold better than someone who feeds quite a bit less????
Do people who have more hiding spaces seem to do better with the females holding better and easier?
Any thoughts..????
