Real Lufubu?

I have noticed that several vendors have been referring to "Real" Lufubu in their stock lists. Is there some question about what is or is not a "real" Lufubu? Was someone offering questionable fish?

I think it deals with their collection point....the ones they call "real" are supposedly collected a little further upstream from the others and are a little harder to collect. They say that the color on the "real" ones is more standout than the others as well.

Ok Randall that makes sense. I would assume that they will try to charge a higher price for the "real" Lufubus as well. Of course as a buyer you have no way of verifying the actual collection point.

Check the picture of actual fish, what Ive seen lately are the same old Lufubu that have been going around but are still marketed as the "real" Lufubu. Ask for a picture before you buy and compare to my first batch that I got from Mike in CS. Ive know first hand the difference because Ive got them both...

Mark Young reported that the "real" lufubus are collected in a rocky area a little further out where they is some wave action too.

Lufubu is the name of a river that flows into the lake. Any fish collected near this area is call lufubu. The lufubus you see with more blue rainbow type colors are collected a little further south and closer to the blue rainbow collection point. The lufubus that have more red are collected north of river and still called lufubu. The further you go north on the SW side of the lake the redder the tropheus.

I personally think that tropheus (especially south variants) migrate from rock pile to rock pile depending on how high the water level in the lake is and there is natural hybridization taking place as we speak. There should be micro collection points distinction for a number of the southern variants. But I don't think this is going to happen anytime soon b/c most tropheus are not even formally named.

The "sp." in front of the middle name of certain tropheus means that species is not yet formally recognized. Additionally, the "collection point" is also an informal name before a formal one is given. Then we move to trade names which....I don't think are worth a penny.

The 4-5 redder lufubus you have are not what most people are reporting as "real." I think those are collected near the river on the northern side. Either way, they look Fn good!

The "real" lufubu collected by Mark Young do not match the description of the redder ones you got.

Anyone that wants to know more can do a forum search on tropheus fanatic. I think this forum has the best discussion on this issue. Plus, having Mark posting on there really gives interesting first hand knowledge from the lake.

So it is about like the difference between Red Rainbow Kambwimba/Kasanga/Kantalamba - Same fish with minor variations in dorsal/accent color?

Yeah but the variation is much more noticeable and they are collected in a relatively smaller area then the RR's different collection point.

Iam going to grow out some fry to see which parents they take after (5 out of the 6 are dominant males, so its a 50/50 shot that the fry will have more red).

There is a difference in Lufubu color, you can tell just in the 2 times Mike brought them in. The first batch was AMAZING, the second were average.

You can really tell the difference in Cesar's fish, he got fish from both.

Its hit or miss.
