  • Moliro vs. Lupota

    Hey Everyone,
I will be picking up a group of WC Trophs in a couple of weeks, and he has Moliro and Lupota. He said his importer claims the Lupota are the reddest of the sp. red available. I was wondering what you folks have to say?
And since they are reds, I shouldn't even attempt putting anything other than more of their own kind in right? Like no namansi? I've read over and over that the reds are horn dogs.

Don't know about them being any redder than a moliro. All sp. red are very moody and color depends on mood. I would still get the lupota b/c they are so much rarer than the moliro.
I ate my fish that died.

              Couple of things...

              1. There is nothing more red than Moliro, and it is extremely red with excited. Lupotas Red is more centralized in the throat area and flank behind the head, but is not so mood dependant. Lupota's red is more marroon in color. This is why many times you will see them listed as "Purple Collar"

              2. Sp.Red's are the abosolute worst hybrid makers. Do not put them with any other tropheus except Duboisi. Annectens might have a chance, but most likely I would not try it.

If you want that flaming red, go with Moliro

Both Moliro and Lupota are availible in Burundi Pondraised. Personally, I would try to get wilds of one of these, because Burundi has not done a very good job at maintaining good blood lines as of late.

Old World Exotic has Moliro's right now, and yes Moliro is more common, but not so much in wilds.

Thanks guys. I will ask if they're from Burundi and respectfully decline if they are. If I'm dropping that much money, I want good, solid bloodlines. I like the flaming red more. At first, because of the "less common" factor, I was leaning towards Lupota, but I harken back to my first jaw dropping experience I had upon seeing a Troph and that was a Moliro. So I think it will be Moliro...first I'll ask where they came from.
I'm picking up a small WC group of Musanga that I will put in the 75 with the Kalambo (rest assured I will take the loner Chilambo female out!!!) on Thursday.
The Lupota will be in my house in three weeks. They're going into the 135.
                Pics will be forthcoming....

                  nice choice!

from my exp. with chimbas, i noticed them to be a little bit more aggro then the red rainbows i kept, but not much, honestly, i dont notice much difference in overall behaviour, they both were moody,(color wise) but they were pretty much the same imo.

of course, geoff and others can probably give more insight on this then me.

you definatly wont be dissapointed in the lupotas, i almost bought a group off aquabid last year, 33 3" fish 1:2 ratio for #350, but decided to go with geos instead, lol

down the road i would love to own either namansis, anecten kekese or lupotas.

post pics when you get them in.

                    Hey Guys,
I opted for the Lupota. I will be getting 10 WC trios in a few weeks once they've QT'd. I am picking up the small group (12-14) of WC musanga and Thurs. I ordered 10 more (promised to be female heavy) WC musanga that I will pick up at the same time as the Lupota. I will QT the new group of musanga in a 55 and hope they don't kick the s#!T out of each other in that tank. I will get pics off before covering the tank...
Thanks again for input, it is greatly valued,

                        Thai,
Once I get them, I will take some better pictures than the ones I saw when I googled for images of Lupota. They don't look like anything special from a few of the photos.
I look forward to the musanga. I really like that variant. I look forward to finding out their differnces first hand from the Chilambo.

I think Livua are the best looking sp.red in my opinion as well, Jesper.

Lupota are some sweet fishes! Cannot wait to see the pics.
