  • How to keep troph/petro adults from eating fry???

DONT SAY MORE ROCKS...thats stupid, we have all seen Geoff's tanks and some of them dont have very many rocks at all.

My tank is 240gallons with 13 Petro Macro's and 44 Tropheus Chimba and is already packed with 400lbs of Fossil Rock. There are tons of small hiding spots already. I used to strip them, so that is my first problem, but now I want them spitting in the tank. Breeding is bananas in the tank. There is always at least 5 trophs holding and usually at least one petro. They have been in this tank for around two months now. They have already eaten three batches of petro fry and I would say probably at least 4 batches of troph fry. My last group of fry were petros and there were around 15 of them...I am down to only 1 left. The good news is that the fry is starting to roam the open territory for a little bit at a time. Are they getting used to seeing fry??? Is this guy just lucky??? Any tricks I should be doing...

Probably going to have to remove them. Grow them out in another tank. When I do water changes on the 200's the just spit swim to the front glass and I can net them up easy. I watch my trews blast a fry the other night. I had no ideal they would do that.

According to Geoff, keeping a single colony of a single species is the way to curb this behavior. Otherwise, with multiple species/variants, each will feel threatened by the other and, hence, eat the other's fry.

I know, I know, but...he also said that if that doesn't work...add more rocks.

Randell knows the answer to the question he asked.

And it's not like Geoff has no rocks.

In fact, Geoff has the ideal rocks for fry to grow up in.....Texas Holy Rock.

Its not the rocks...MB/Geoff hit the nail on the head...the species are eating each others fry. I guess I will just give it time. I hate to see good money get eaten so quick...but at least they are getting their protein!!!
