has anyone mixed more than 2 variants in a single tank? I have a 125g. and was thinking of maybe 20-25 trophs., 5-7 of each variant. if i buy all fry and raise them together would this work? I have no intention of breeding, I just want a nice show tank. if it would work what variants would do the best with each other? any info. would be appreciated.. thanks

Make sure you have several of each variant. I tried the same thing but had two main variants and only a couple of each other variant. The ones I only had a couple of had extreme aggression towards each other and the aggression led to bloat in the bullied fish. I was growing them out in a 30" tank. It got better when I moved them up to a 4' tank.135 gal Fahaka Puffer

BeefyG has another good point:
Tropheus will pick on another tropheus no matter the variant if it is just two or three in a tank together.
But they prefer to kill their own kind first.
The fewer the numbers of each group you have the more carnage you will have. I would go 12-15 each group.
As fry/juvies you'd be ok, but not much past that, IMO>
Not having the intent to breed is all well and good, but the chances are great that they will despite your intentions. Especially if you get two variants from the same species. Keep sp. red out of the mix entirely. They'd try and tempt your dog if they could.
Whether you choose one large group of one variant (and they are spectacular in single species/variant tanks) or you get two or three types, you won't be dissapointed with Tropheus...

Jenney is correct you say you don't want to breed but when the fish reach breeding age they will breed and then you will have alot of fry that will need to be flushed cause of interbreeding sorry to tell you thisCustom Aquarium Cabinets Justin Henry 281-739-8723

They will cross breed.
Regardless of resale issues.
They might be gifted away b/c current owner doesn't want them anymore instead of flushing them.
Second sell gives them up when bored....so on and so forth.
No one will know what they are, no one case prove what they are, they will mix up somehow with the purer lines.
I flush all mutts.I ate my fish that died.

And that is the problem you'll have mutts breeding with pure breed and infecting the hobby with mutts. Before to long the pure strains will be taintedCustom Aquarium Cabinets Justin Henry 281-739-8723

Or you can put a big catfish in with them when they are breeding size. It should gobble up any fry.
