I don't think that it is as dramatic as the whole species being put at risk. They are still thriving (for the most part) wild in the Lake.

We also shouldn't confuse hybrid- which is the term used when two different species produce offspring- with crossbreeding-which occurs when two different-looking individuals from the same species produce offspring. Example: sp. red X moorii is a hybrid. sp. red Moliro X sp. red Lupota is a crossbreeding. And crossbreeding happens naturally in the wild all of the time, that's how the different variants came to be in the first place.

What I don't like about crossbreeding is that, as afore mentioned, there are enough ID problems without that going on in the hobby/trade. AND that people will tell you that the $18/fry are one variant when they are a cross of two -which are fairly worthless to most Tropheus keepers.

Really. How about trophs with I love you tattooed on their sides? Now that is definitely evil!

Never mix a sp.red with anything other than Duboisi.

Always get the largest tank possible.

Make sure the Variants are as far apart color wise in the flank area especially, and have a good balance of males and females of each.

Any failure on these three goals, and you will have a SEVERE RISK of crossbreeding, which is seriously frowned upon in the Tropheus Hobby, and with me.

I don't know. I seen some crazy combos work in a tank long term, 2+ years, with not one account of cross breeding.

But I also seen the most "uncommon" combo crossbreed.

At the end of the day, it's "doable". Just keep a watchful eye.
