  • Lighting for 60" x 18" with Tropheus Annectens

    I got a 115 gallon Oceanic with Tropheus Annectens Kekese.  The tank is 60" x 18" x 24" Deep.

The annectens females and juviniles all fish (3" or less) are black and white with some yellow in dorsals and some sides.

The males turn greyish with light blue dorsals, to where under cetrain lighting they look marron.

I want to try this fixture

Do you think this would be a good choice?

Anyone had these lights, and had any problem with them overheating if you do not use the mouting feet.  I am looking to get the 48" freshwater and let it sit directly on the glass tops.

    Thanks for any comments...

From what I've heard, the T5s run a bit cooler than, say, T12s, so I think it would be fine to just set them on the glass. I'm changing to T5s soon on one of my tanks, so I think it's a great choice!

Re: Lighting for 60" x 18" with Tropheus Annectens

I have the coralife T5 setup over my N.Multifasciatus tank and in the tank the Multi's have a slight yellow tip on their fins and I also have blue line tetras as dithers.

The T5 setup I have is the actinics with 10,000k. The blue in the tetras is almost electric like a neon sign under ~6700k but gone under the actinic/10,000k. The yellow tips on my Multi's are washed out under this lighting as well. I think the colors in my shelldweller tank is similar to your annectens without the darker black colors but black shows up black regardless of lighting kelvin. If you know where I can find a freshwater T5 30" bulb locally I can let you use the fixture to see how it looks.

Forgot to add, this fixture sits on the glass tops and is slightly warm to the touch after being on all day.

The setup comes with a 10,000K bulb and a Freshwater Bulb. The fresh water bulb says its a 6,700K

With that said, you think the yellow in these fish would be washed out, and the blue in the Males would be washed out as well?

I think the combo should be really good for them.

I just saw the Coralife Freshwater T5 48" fixture.

This is about half the price of the other one, and the bulbs are the same kelvin, but only 28Watts each.

Which would you get?  The higher wattage is more heat, but I am guessing the light will be more intense or am I wrong on that?

I think the Coralife fixture you're talking about is just regular T5, not T5 HO. The HO will definitely be more intense.

That is correct, I just noticed that.

Thanks a lot, that makes more sense now.

Just need to decied if I want the intense light or not..

I might be answering my own question, but with a 60" tank and a 48" fixture, maybee the HO T-5 would be better.

I just hate to spend the extra power if the visual lighting will be the same.

I want to the fish to look nice, but not washed out.

                    Sure thing.  :)

I've seen some 60" T5 fixtures out there...thought about any of those? I just saw on the Special Order thread that you and ek talked about 48" vs. 72".

When you say visual lighting, do you mean between the NO T5s and the HO T5s?

                        Geoff,
I have 10K, Aquasun, Actinic, White Actinic, 6500K and regular GE household bulbs up here. I or we can try different bulbs on the Annectens I have here and see what looks best. Only difference is the bulbs I have are T12.

If you could point me in the direction of finding a 60" fixture let me know.

I think somewhere we had discussed getting (2) 30" but the bulbs are the same as the 24" just the fixture is couple inches longer, and the price higher by about 5 bucks.

So, wonder if the same would go for 60" vs 48"?  maybe not..

Thanks Mike, I appreacite that.  I cannot wait to come and see you next weekend.

I really want to find a really nice lighting, by finding the right Kelvin to get the color as best possible.

Then it would be up to finding out how intense the lights would be at higher wattage.

I wonder now, what the wattge would do to the color?

Well, I'm still looking, but I've found 60" retro kits and bulbs, just not a fixture yet. But the bulbs are 80W, so they are actually around 60".

Here's one of the retrofit kits (Tek, so expensive):
