Geoff - since you have been to Burnet and I have not.. what is faster do you think ?  When arriving into Austin.. should I take 71 to I-35 the north to Georgetown and then head west to Burnet... or should I take 71 to 281 and then north to Burnet ?

Please remember I am driving 71 into Austin on the south side.

Ditto, these directions will help me determine if I can make it also.  I have an event later that day which may keep me in Austin.

Jesper good luck with the Austin traffic,I would try to stay on I35 till you get into Georgetown,2-3 exits after fm1431 you will need to get off. Traffic is horrible at all hours of the day esp around downtown, should be smooth sailling after you pass that.
If I remember correctly there is a Whataburger next to the DQ.

So far with these directions, I can tell you this.

If you are coming in on 71 from Katy, take 183 North (next major exit after the airport) then jump on 35 North to Georgetown (this will bypass all the downtown traffic)

I live near 183 and 71, if I can work out the time, maybe we can follow each other.  I would need to leave early since I have to be in San Antonio at 3:30.

ddaquaria - awesome :)   I have to leave no later than about 2:45pm from Burnet... I have to - my job and life depends on it :)  be back in Katy at 6pm that evening.  (I have to be at work at 7pm that evening for a PBX upgrade and power generation testing.  This was supposed to have been done on the weekend of the original date we set for the rock hunt but got postponed when it was not possible to have all the vendors there... then it got moved to the 15 of Dec and at that point I could not say no....  but there is no way I am missing this rock hunt... I am in terrible need of some holey rocks for at least 3 tanks right now...

Now the only thing I could also do and I am wondering if this helps is that I could turn off 71 in Bastrop and take 95 to Elgin and then drive hwy 290 from Elgin to Manor and then take 130 to Georgetown... has anyone taken 130 before ?   It shows to be a toll road..
okie I decided to read up on hwy 130... its a toll road from 71 now to Georgetown (the 290-71 stretch opened Sep 6, 2007) - I am thinking I am taking 71 to 130 directly to Georgetown....

yeah thats part of the new tollroads they have been building, just keep in mind all that area is usually 2 lane roads from
Elgin (dont blink!!) to Manor. Population boom  has just started in those areas especially Manor and Hutto. The toll way would be a good way to go just remeber youll come out north of where your suppose to be meeting at.

                • Re: Rock Dig III - Burnet Texas

the website for the toll road shows that it now is open from 71 south of Austin all the way to I-35 on the north side of Georgetown.  I would take the toll road until I got to hwy 29 and then head west on 29 to Burnet.
Since I already have Houston toll road stickers in the truck it will be billed to me without a problem.
the only area I am worried about at this time would be the Bastrop area...

Honestly I do not know the area that well.

The two times that I have gone there from the Houston Area, this is how we whent..

                    The First time
290 to 734 (Palmer Lane) to 35N to 29W to Burnet

                    The Other time
                    290 to 35N to 29W to Burnet

The Palmer Lane route took us thru a number of lights, and traffic sucked.  So, the second time we whent we took 290 all the way to 35N and it seemned better.

                    I am not sure..what about 290 to 130N then 45W to I-35N then 29W to Burnet?

                    I am open to anysuggestion..

Everyone has two options.  They can meet at Aquarium World in Houston at 7:15AM or meet us at the Dairy Queen in Burnet, at about 11AM

We are leaving at 7:30AM come #@!&& or highwater from Aquarium World.

We should be at the Dairy Queen right at 11AM on 281 South in Burnet.

Then we eat some burgers or something, call my Uncle to come get us, and we follow him to his property.  So, we typcially get there about Noon.

                            We leave there about 4-4:30PM.

I know some people will leave early, so for those people you need to pay very close attention to every turn we make.

I got lost out there with Tim and David and it was kinda scarry, but we made it.
