A colony is a group, but there's a certain connotation when one says "colony of Trophs", which includes certain minutiae like colony stability, aggression control, breeding, etc. To me, and most folks going by those who have chimed in, that number is 20+.

Ok so then what about those troph keepers that have let's say 8 of one variant 12 of a different variant and like 6 of a third would that constitute a colony or just three groups?

All things are possible with science and animals. It's only theoretical. Like everything, there are exceptions to the rules. If you have acquired a small group of tropheus from someone who successfully kept that group, you stand a chance of being successful. If you separate an established group and get a small number from a large group, I will put my money that it'll end bad. It's the reason knowledgable people on here sell fish in groups and not separating them. I have learned enough bad lessons to not take chances with small groups unless its the only option.

Small groups are ok , I have get groups of 6 and make a colony of 25 , its just tweak the tank to make it work, I think with the years keeping them is when you learn to deal with most situations and make it work.

Btw small colony for me is 10-15

You can breed groups of 8-10 easy.

I buy and sell groups smaller than that all the time.
