I get up in the morning turn on the lights and its 78, go to work, come home its 78..feed the fish at night its 78,  go to bed turn off the lights its 78.

3 days later it might be 77 or 79, the another 3 or 4 days its another degree higher or lower.  Nothing I've seen where it changed hourly or even daily.

It took 2 days to raise the temp in my 135(+55g sump) from 68 to 78, using 3 x 100 watt heaters. I dont think the water in your 300 would change quickly enough that youd miss it.

When I had my heater too low last winter the temps would fluctuate up to 3deg overnight.

What about during water changes Geoff?

The only way I think it would be the NLS is IF he is OVERFEEDING.  All of my tropheus and petros get fed NLS and I have not had any issues.  I can't speak for the Ectodus though since I have never had any.  I feed 1 to 2 times per day at a size of 1/2 teaspoon during the week and 3/4 to whole teaspoon on the weekend.  I agree that it is better to underfeed than overfeed this food.

              I think it's a number of things....

NLS if fed properly will do no harm as the next food

that's what I was saying in a "nut shell". LOL!

This isn't Geoff's first time with bloat and it won't be his last. I think it is good that he is making this public so that the new tropheus keepers can gain knowledge in regards to bloat. Bloat will happen to everyone regardless of how many years you've been keeping fish.

                          Re: ARgh! I got Bloat - 300 Gallon - Trophs, Ectodus & P

                          Here is an update...

                          Day 3 - Saturday
30% Waterchange, 1-tsp per 10 gallons epson salt, installed a 250W heater set at 80F, Dosed 75%,25% - Ectodus had no issue - Tropheus no sign of physical bloat, Ectodus white-stringy poop, Petros mostly not eating.

                          Day 4 - Sunday
Removed the heater and threw it away.  Tank temp got to 86F and the fricken heater was still on.  Last time I ever use a used heater that came from someone else.  Dosed 100% - Ectodus had no issue - All but 1-Tropheus are eating, Some Ectodus white stringy poop all are eating though, Petros still mostly not eating.

                          Day 5 - Monday
Dosed 100%, Tank Temp 84F, All but 1-Trophues Eating, All Ectodus Eating 1 or 2 still have white stingy poop, Petros no noticallble change

At this point, I am convinved that the change in Diet was the highly probably cause, and the Temperature was of no effect to the cause of the Bloat issue.  I firmly believe that the Petros got sick, then made everyone else get sick from it.  The Ectodus were Eating 100% fine from the begining whatever food I put in there, the Trophs have been eating NLS for over a year and had no problem, and the Petros from the begining did not take well to NLS or Aquarian Tropical Flake.

I should have stuck to a regime of Aquarian FLake Food, and if I wanted to feed a pellet food, I should have stuck with the HBH Super Soft they were accumstomed to, or atleast pre-soaked Hikari or NLS before feeding it to them. I know any pellet food is much more difficult to get them to eat this type of food.  I should have stuck with my experience, but I coughed it up and it bit me in the ***.

I honestly think that if the others were in tip-top shape then they could overcome another becoming sick....but that is just my take on the whole bloat thing.

As for the heater....man that sucks! but my suggestion was to raise the heat to make them metabolize at a faster rate and possibly induce hunger. Hope it starts picking up for you cause those is some nice fishies!
