    Re: ARgh! I got Bloat - 300 Gallon - Trophs, Ectodus & P

    Traci,
I went 3 years without any bloat when I first started with these fish.
The number one common cause is stress that amplifies whatever is residing in the fish.
Some parasite or bacteria gets out of hand and then it cascades.
If there were any money in fish health for these types of fish I would certainly pursue if further in my work.

Fish eat sleep and play in their own poop....mouthing it is probably not much different then living in it.....just my 0.02 worth.

        Update

Day 6 - Tuesday - 30% Waterchange, 100% Dose - Ectodus eating, but 1 or 2 still have stringy poop, Tropheus eating 100%, Petrochromis about 50% but the 50 eating are eating stronger

Day 7 - Wednesday - 100% Dose - Ectodus eating no noticable issues, Tropheus 100% recovered, Petrochromis maybee 70/30 eating to not eating.

You can definately tell the fish are getting hungry, because they are getting more and more agressive in attacking the food.

Still just taking it easy and feeding only flake food.

          Day 8 - Thursday

No dosing.  All the ectodus are eating, 1- sitll has stringy poop.  All the Trophs are eating strong and energetic.  All but one Trewavasae has eaten something in the last day or two.  About half of the Trewavasae are eating strong, the other half is kinda eating, and one not eating.

          WE shall see...

Sounds like things are turning on the brighter side for you there Geoff! Never doubted your ability to bring them back to health to begin with though so keep at 'em!

You know it really saddens me to read these bloat thread which for whatever reason I'm can't resist opening and reading.....I am usually sitting in front of my Ilangi tank while on the computey and to look up and have all of them glued to the front glass watching me makes me start to wonder how I would take it if they were to contract some sort of disease.

It's a good thing that some of them like this one ends in a happy ending or happy enough.....gives faith that the cure is possible and you don't have to lose them all to bloat if it happens. :emtthumbs:

                Quoc,
You are on the right track.
While still being a fish it is still an animal, and they have needs.
I have whole heartedly become convinced over the years tropheus are pack animals.
They love being together, no where should this be more apparent to you then watching my Mtoto.
You see their reaction, they love to school and they never colored until i combined them into 50-80+ colony.
I have some bright yellow females that you would swear have no business being in that tank.

I couldn't agree more about them being pack animals!!!!

Your Mtoto are prime example of this and for anyone who has had the opportunity to see them is probably gonna be ruined cause after seeing them you only want large colonies since anything else will be inferior.

Why am I thinking that in a couple of years when I am ready for a tank of Tropheus that I will look back at this post and think to myself, damn I cannot have enough of them in this tank.. hehe

I know.. I have listen to you people and all I know is that when I goto see Mike for fish I better bring like $1000 to get a real colony going.. that is if I get a wild caught colony.. I am prolly going to start out with like 60 juvi's and let them grow out.

$1000 is a bit shortchanged if you are looking for a "real" colony....  j/k but in some cases no I'm not.

Probably the cheapest and most rewarding is to buy fry and grow them out but I will say there is a bit of satisfaction knowing you got wilds.

                            Update...

                            Day 9 - Friday

No dosing all but one Trewavasae eating back to normal.  The fish are definately showing signs of being back to health and wanting to eat. I definately see that they have been starving pretty much and are really letting me know this

                            Day 10 - Saturday

No dosing..still one Trewavasae not eating too good.  I also found one Ectodus with really long stringy poop, but all the Ectodus have been eating like pigs for several days now.  So..not sure what to think of that.  I am feeding twice a day flakes, and only one pinch of NLS.  Just trying to take it easy on them, and not wanting to push the issue.

Installed the 1200 MaxJet upgrade kit to 2100 gph.  That thing is awesome..Flow shoots debris all the way to the otherside of the tank.

Day 11 Sunday - Going to perform a 50% waterchange today and put the Chempure back into the FX5's and pretty much call this thing over and done with.  That last Petro eats like a bite then spits it out.  I have not treated in the last 3 or 4 days, and I think it is a bit overkill to keep dosing.  I dunno...maybe hold off on putting the CHempure back in and go ahead and does another 3 days or so...just to see if it makes a difference.
