Bloat is passed by feces of infected fish. You go eat the crap of a person with an upset stomach virus or bacteria, and then tell me if your not going to get sick as well.

At this point, I am convinved that the change in Diet was the highly probably cause, and the Temperature was of no effect to the cause of the Bloat issue.  I firmly believe that the Petros got sick, then made everyone else get sick from it.  The Ectodus were Eating 100% fine from the begining whatever food I put in there, the Trophs have been eating NLS for over a year and had no problem, and the Petros from the begining did not take well to NLS or Aquarian Tropical Flake.  

I should have stuck to a regime of Aquarian FLake Food, and if I wanted to feed a pellet food, I should have stuck with the HBH Super Soft they were accumstomed to, or atleast pre-soaked Hikari or NLS before feeding it to them. I know any pellet food is much more difficult to get them to eat this type of food.  I should have stuck with my experience, but I coughed it up and it bit me in the EDIT.

I have to disagree on this one about food....Now I'm not supporting NLS, but we picked up our fish at the same time. Except for the first 24 hours my guys have been strictly on NLS.

Now, something I was thinking would be the fact that you place them into a new system and they develop bloat from shock. But i'm not an expert!

I would have to lean towards the food as the cause in this particular case. We all picked up our fish the same day, and I came home, did a water change and put the petros in the 150 with the fronts, which had only been cycling 6 days. From there I've only fed aquarian flakes and my petros are doing just fine.

There could be somewhat a issue with the new water, but I did have a completely cycled for months AquaClear 500 and the (2) FX5's were equiped with one basket each of Bio-Media from a 2217 that had been running for couple weeks.

Then to top it all off, I also got 4 bags of the 90 gallon rated Bio-Spira and dosed the tank.

I only put in 12-Ectodus, 15-Petros, and a week later I put in the 9-Lunangwa.

I watched for the first week the Nitrate, Nitirte and Ammonia and I never had any detectable Nitrite or Ammonia other than the ammonia in the tank when I filled it from the tap.  Which in PAsadena already comes in with 0.5ppm

I am in no way trying to say that the Petros were sick in the begining, I take on total blame for trying to get them to eating a hard pellet when they were not accustomned to it.  In my experience with Petros and Trophs, Petros are much more difficult to bring back once they get sick.  Tropheus on the other hand, I have had one live in a wheelbarrow on a frigid new years night, that was only partially covered in water while he laid on his side.  He was like that for atleast 5-8 hours before I found him and put him into the fish tank.

He fully recovered with no bloat or anything. Tropheus are tough little ********, once you got them bullet proof and stick to your regime.

I watch closey my water conditions I got more test kits than some pet stores have and a digital pH meter.  I check at each water change to gauge the effectiveness of filtration and their feeding habbits.  I believe the Petros were upset by the move and the new food that was a hard pellet nutrient rich, and it was too much for them.

Derek, I know you had yours eating NLS after the second day, and so did a lot of others.  I too have done that, but I dont like too.

Another possible I am looking at is the dominant male Lunangwa is a mean SOB and he chases everybody and bulldogs that largest Petro from time to time.  HE could be a source of a problem, but until I get everyone on track I cannot add more fish.

I may remove him to timeout.

Do most people here feed NLS to their Trophs?  I don't, that's why I'm asking.

geoff- 80F works for me, YEAR ROUND. if they are sick I think you need a heater asap.it wont hurt them. just trying to help. good luck

Well, I remember you saying something....and as stupid as it sound it made alot of sense.

I guess I was succesful because the new guys caught on quick as to when feeding time is and what was dropped in the tank most be food...............

Well, Honestly if you were healthy eating crap is probably not gonna make you sick bacteria wise but just sick at the thought of eating it so.....that's out the window.  I mean back in the day there was second harvest  8O


And I feed NLS to anything and everything that makes it past my front door....My Ilangi's got lost en-route but eventually 24hrs after me physically getting them in the tank they got NLS. Bought a group of badly beaten Moops from the LFS which probably was feeding them whatever the rest of the LFS get...they got NLS right off the bat and only Thera+A at that, did not lose any and even brought most back to health. WC gobies from Alex....brought home and was fed NLS and to this day still NLS. Opthalmotilapia.....well they get whatever I feed my Mobas which is a protein rich diet of NLS Thera+A, Spirulina Brine, Krill, Mysis, Shrimp mix etc. I have never had a problem doing so...none of my closer friends have had problems doing so either.

I never really spoke of this but the lone stoopid aggressive male that I had to pull from my Ilangi tank lived with my Mobas for quite some time....he got anything and everything the Mobas got and even more then he should of since he was much more aggressive when it came to eating then the mobas....he was by himself though and he did perfectly fine!  8O

Not knocking anyone on the matter but I think it's kinda lame to blame it solely on a food....I have seen some "spirulina" flakes in which people feed to their herbivores which had numbers that made NLS look like algae ash and those people swear by it and never had a problem with it.


Maybe you should qt them separately in regards to sp. and even after they get better....make sure everyone is on the same page regarding diet and such before putting them back together?

I'm not against NLS or any other particular food for that matter, but the reason I said it could have been the food in the first place was because he didn't really acclimate them to it. With my first original male petro I started him out on flakes just because they're easy to digest. Once I was comfortable with that, I would literally add 1 pellet each day and let it soak with the flakes for a few seconds. This pattern continued as the amount of pellets increased as each day went by. Now I don't even have to soak them anymore. Since he's in the 90 with the mpimbwe's, I just drop them in dry. I plan to use this same idea for the petros in the 150.

Maybe not the best technique, but it has saved me from bloat a few times

None of the above stated in previous post were acclimated or weaned off/onto anything.

Not trying to start some pellet/flake food war here....just stating that it's hard to blame something that tons of people use with zero problems.....When it comes down to diagnosing a problem I myself will compare the settings/situations/the whole nine yards......then pick at the ones I am lacking on compared to the others or other.
