Tropheus Aggression

Our dominate male Nkonde has a really bad attitude and is bullying the other fish.  He is amazing to look at, and I believe he is trying to spawn because he's been trying to lure females into his rock pile.

But we lost a Nkonde last night and I believe it was due to the aggression.  The one we lost was smaller and you could see from his tail that he'd been nipped at.  I don't want this to happen again, so what can I do?

I've already disrupted the territories once and that didn't seem to do much.  

I have other Trophs that I can put in there with the Nkonde if anyone thinks it might help.

Any ideas?  No thumping.   :)

you could net him and leave him in the net for 1 or 2 days. some times they bruise up their nose trying to get out of the net. but it heals up in a few days. you may have to do 3 or 4 times over a couple of weeks. it's a pain removing rocks to net a fish.you are trying to break his spirit. how many are in the group.dither fish work good. a nervous, fast moving group like filament barbs.they distract him from the other fish. he may be done.keep a eye on him. he may need to be put in a different tank and be a loner.Alex always told me to punish the aggresor.

I was at Geoff's not to long ago and noticed that he had a tank set apart for the bully tropheus to be put into
"timeout". I'm certainly not a tropheus expert myself, its just a thought.

That is what Geoff was doing. 10+ years of tropheus cant be completely wrong !!!

No kidding...I pretty much follow whatever Geoff does, or says to try when it come to Trophs.

How long ago did you disrupt the territory?

I find that the dominant male will always be the dominant male....removing him will help settle things down but there's also the chance of the second in command coming up to rule and stressing the male removed. I have had some males become super agro and I just left them to be...eventually they settled down.

Maybe that's why I haven't lost any fish due to aggression? Or is it that those found dead nipped up is because they were looking for another source of food?

They are so happy all the time cause they get fed NLS?

net him, leave him in same tank. after 4 or 5 times he's hopless. then he is on a perment vacation to another tank where he will whip everyone he can. my name is fshfrk and i approved this message.

I'm more of a thumper....net once, thump and it should be done then and there! No netting multiple times etc.
