  • Can tropheus float like frontosa?

    Boxers,

So I was reading this article by by Jonathan Price titled, "How Can I Stop My Fish From Floating?"  The link to it is http://www.cichlid-forum.com/article...a_floating.php.

In the article he writes that, "When feeding the Frontosa will take in air along with the food. Surface feeding is very unnatural for them since their home range is some 50+ meters below the surface. The air bubble is usually dispelled but on occasion it will become lodged and if not cleared a membrane can encase the bubble resulting in a case of permanent float."

I have kept fronts in the pass.  I did have a mpimbwe blue variant float on me once.  However, this lasted for about a week and it passed his system.  I was just wondering has anyone seen this problem among the tropheus sp.?

I do see my ulwiles taking in air while they try to eat off the surface or get chased to the surface.  Nevertheless, they always let the bubbles go.  In addition, I sometimes see them holding the air for a while then letting it go.  I hope this is not a major problem.

So what do you guys think?

myjohnson.... I have only right now Tropheus Dub Fry who as soon as food hits the surface act like piranha's and attack the surface like missiles launched from submarines.  I am POSITIVE that they have to be getting some air with the food.. but they have never floated on me.  I could be wrong.. but I dont think they would hit the surface as hard if this was something that can cause them discomfort.

I have not experienced or read about Tropheus floating like this.  It is something interesting to think about, but there is not likely a issue since Trophs may eat time to time at the surface.

I see my Ulwiles holding air all the time and when you see any of my fish eat they are splashing water all over.

I think the problem with cyphos/fronts is that they are a deeper water fish.

Thanks for the feed back guys.  I did have a little fry holding air longer than I would like (over 1/2 a day). Got a little worried.  He was eating and everything so I wasn't too stressed.

However, I think he was just playing with the air or something.....he seems to be 100% now.

They were always 100%....they play with the bubbles all the time and the reason fronts get float would probably be the reason trophs would not get it.

We have some Trophs who go to the top and get air and then swim around and blow the bubbles out.  Like they are doing it on purpose...not sure why, but we saw EK's doing the same thing.  It's cute to watch.  And we've never had a Troph float.

I have had a female hold air as if she was holding fry for weeks....she didn't eat during that time either but nothing ill happened to her.
