My thoughts on the black spots......as geoff said there are several theories out there about what causes these black spots. I don't think we can say for sure that cause number two is the reason for the black spots. However, with the data that we do have on this black spot issue geoff's assumption is on point.
I had experience with the black spots from my wc moliro colony. I changed 50% of the water ever 5 days and feed only NLS and the spots never went away. Nevertheless, I have indirect experience from Ek's ilangi stock. They came in from TNT and were called WC. They had a lot of black spots when they came in. But now most of the spots are gone and they look great!!!!!!
So what I'm trying to say is as of now we do not know 100% what causes the black spots. But we can do what's in our power to make it go away. Feed them good food, over filtrate, and do water changes often.
Hope this information helps......keep us updated.
p.s. there is an upside to trophs having black spots.....you can keep track of who is who. :)
Yeah I don't fret too much about it, it's like birth marks and moles through my eyes.
Some people really hate it and can't accept the black blotches or even variance throughout the colony but I have grown to understand that that is how it's gonna be and you "can't have your cake and eat it too". The differences really helps telling the difference.
Ok thanks for the info everyone. I take it from everyone's info here that it is possible to get rid of them but if not then no big deal? My only other concern is the breeding aspect of this issue. We were told that it was genetic and they would pass it on so it would be best to remove those with the splotches from the colony if breeding is happening so as not to pass on the issue. What is your ideas on this? Also it would be impossible to only remove the ones with splotches because they all have them!
Oh and they didnt seem to like the zucchini too much. They Mbuna tank loved it but the Tropheus not so much. Any suggestions? Just keep offering it ?
I don't put any fresh veggies for my tank....just the occasional Nori.
As for the blotching, If it really bothered you and your main reason for keeping the Ilangi's is for the money then you are better off getting rid of any imperfect Ilangi and keeping only the perfect ones.
Well we definitely would like them to not have them so that they are nicer to look at and we definitely have no plans to make money off of them. But if they were to reproduce and we didn't keep all the fry then we wouldnt feel right selling fry that were not quality or from quality adults.
Heather had said you guys had slipped a while on the waterchanges. I would not give up on them, I would increase the waterchanges amount and frequency, and feed them a good quality pellet food like NLS, Hikari Excel, or Dainichi Veggie Deluxe or FX.
Be sure to wein them over to the pellets if your feeding somehting else over like a 2-week period.
If you want to get rid of them, give me a call. Otherwise, dont give up man.
