    Re: Rare Tropheus

So is it safe to say that europe has first and best choice of most imports of all species?

When it comes to the fish I would rather have the ones that act most like the ones in the lake.  Color and shape is nice but I want to see as close as possible what they do in their natural habitat.  this is my main motivation for fish I would purchase.  Does anyone notice differences in the F1, F2, Wild, and Mutt tropheus as far as behavior goes?

Also I think it takes a scuba diver to really appreciate the population of any given fish on a slope or reef.  Yes it is a big lake but it would not take much to screw up natural populations of Trophs etc. on specific reef/slope areas.

Cool, glad I am still in the good graces. I will not be attending the auction tomorrow. Gas is just too high and I was not planning on getting alot so it would not be worth the tank there and another one back

      Maybe next time

        Re: Rare Tropheus

Most of your collectors are European, they are the ones with the best connections in Africa, and their shipping is about half the cost versus shipping into the US.

So they buy more, purchase more, and the EURO is a lot stronger, so YES they get more, and first dibs on the good stuff.

Their friends will say, hey call so and so, I just collected this or that, and it looks great.

next thing you know new fishes are in Europe.

Physical traits of teeth, color, and size do diffe but, the behavoirs seem pretty much standard.

I have seen in my wildcaughts a tendenancy to be more territorial and agressive, espeically in PEtrochromis species.  I have had some tropheus take many weeks to get eating flakes or pellet foods.  They absolutely refused to eat anything other than romaine, seaweed, or other fresh veggies.  Tankraised, pondraised, and conditioned wilds will eat flakes and pellets like pigs.  This is unatural, but it quickly becomes their new behavoir for food.  This is why a lot of people try to grow as much algae in the tank so they can witness a more natural grazing behavoir of the fish.

            Re: Rare Tropheus

The fish are oppurtunistic and would eat/mouth most things floating/sinking.

But when all 30 of the adult fish are swarming the glass when I walk up there to attack splash and practically jump out of the tank to get to the food, that is unnatural, that is conditioning.

                            Minions of Gozer,
We can do this but it will have to be area specific.
Meaning the Tanz coast will be our best shot.
The Congo is so hit or miss, even with permits and bribes.

I am thinking a pure troph order from the Tanz side, there are still several variants not collected there is real fashion,
And I have a good line now on a decent price for local collections.

                            D,
                            Those fish are not rare.

                            Geoff,
At present I am looking to part with the Karago, they are so cool.
                            Just like the Mtoto.

I already figured they were not rare.

As usual, I'm still interested in other possibilities.  8)
