I've been told that it's ok to mix a moorii species with an sp. black species with out having to worry about them cross-breeding, but I have never done so myself.
The only safe mix on Tropheus is a Duboisi type with any other non-Duboisi type tropheus. Â The next safest would be Annectens with anything else but Brichardi type.
When it comes to moorii types, it is never really safe to mix them. Â There is always a chance of hybridization to occur. Â The best way to combat this is to have the variants be from locations as far apart as possible from the lake, and to have the flank color as distinctly different as possible.
The sp.reds are the most prone to hybridization so you have to be very careful anytime you have them in the tank.
Currently since May 2006, I have had Ikola (sp.black) with Lupota (sp.red) and not had one hybrid produced. Â BUT not a day does not go by that I have to watch extremely close and closely examine all fry produced with a fine tooth comb.
With Moops and Ikola, I would say your playing with severe fire there, becuase not only are both species have yellow flanks, but they are both from the southern part of the and pretty much from the eastern side as well.
I would say no, too risky, I would not do it.

You can always keep petros with any type of troph and don't have to worry about cross-breeding....but I don't think this helps make your decision any easier.
