  • Keeping a Single Petro with Tropheus Colony thoughts?

A long-time LFS owner told me today, while talking about keeping tropheus, that keeping a single petro in with a colony of 15-20 tropheus keeps the agression level down in the tank.  He said he had read about it and it worked.  Any thoughts?  I don't think he was talking about a petro 3 times the size of the biggest tropheus in the tank.

I believe I have heard someone here on the box make that claim as well, not sure though...I think it was Geoff or EK...maybe not???

It does help....In most cases that is.

I have done it several times but honestly 15 Tropheus is quite a low number and as the numbers increase I have experienced that the aggression levels are drop dramatically.

nothing like a petro herding a colony of trophs.

But like bethesdaboy stated it's hit & miss.....In both of my tanks it was just a lone petro in the tank keeping them company.

When I added a petro or colony of petros my Tropheus ran them

                    Hit or miss.

Sometimes the sinlgeton Petro is of the right size and agression that he will keep things herded together, but this can also backfire.  Your dominate Tropheus male will not feel as secure and breeding could be a issue, or he could be threatened enough to engage the Petro.

I have seen this happen several times, and sometimes its a Tropheus win, sometimes its a Petro win all depends on the size of the PEtro.  Most times the bigger fish wins.

It usally helps to keep fish reminded they are not the biggest fish in the sea.  Ask EK, he knows the value of a good thump.

                      Re: Hadn't heard this one......

Sometimes its as simple as a thump!

The trew I had with the ulwiles made an attempt to establish his prescence but was quickly reminded who was the boss by not only the dominant males but some females as well!

In the ilangi tank I have/had kept petro. Famula that made several attempts to establish territory but the dominant male will not have any of that. The singleton eretmodus in there is quite large and super agro but in no way eneough to take charge.....he sticks to fighting the fry which in the numbers they sometimes get the best of him too.

I wanted to try the moshi that alex had and now owned by glove cause I think it would be an awesome battle with the dominant ulwile!

that moshi has been passed around a lot....if people wasn't having problem with it they wouldn't sell it....just my 2 cents.

I think Gilbert eneded up with that Moshi.
