  • Nature Aquarium Society of Houston

First off I would like to thank Ken for allowing and making this happen and extend my thanks to Mzungu for helping me get in contact with Ken.

At our last meeting Me and HoustonFishFanatic brought up the idea to start posting on HFB to open the doors to more new memebers along with spreading the knowledge since we both are member here and noticed the increase of interest in the planted aquarium. After getting a hold of Ken it has now happened and as a member of N.A.S.H. I am really excited about all this because two cool things I am a part of have merged.

John a.k.a. Ajax is the president of N.A.S.H. and should be coming along shortly to introduce himself and speak a bit more about the club but till then I will do my best.....

From what I have gathered in the meetings I have been to and speaking with the members at and away from the meetings, NASH is a local club that is geared towards the knowledge of plants, planted aquarium, aquascaping, plant specifics but basically a Nature Aquarium. Another thing that I thought was cool is that everyone is really friendly and willing to help with problems or when you just need another's opinion. Also the club members are knowledgeable with lots of rare/hard to keep alive plants so that helps when you want that really pretty plant but just can't seem to keep it alive. The aquascaping side of it all is really good too for those that want to step to the next level after achieving plant growth in the tank which is what most all is drooling over with Takashi Amano changing the way everyone sees a planted tank.

There are great things planned as well like collection trips in search of Native plants and having members that are really fluent in the emersed state of aquatic plants as well as identification of those plants. There is also plant swaps that usually happen at each meeting or when we want to get together but have no real topic like we did this last meeting/gettogether where some rare or new to you sp. of plants are offered to those that want to try it.

Again thank you Ken for making this happen and would like to extend the welcome NASH has gotten to all the members of HoustonFishBox!

this is cool, planted tank/nature aquarium or creating a "natural" ecosystem is where my real interest is, although i probably won't be of any help because of extremely limited experience with planted tanks, i will have endless stupid questions that will give all the experienced people good exercise in keeping their craft up to date
    65 gallon - ADA 120p - planted
55 gallon - AGA standard - mix cichlid
    30 gallon tall - eclipse acrylic - semi-planted

Re: Nature Aquarium Society of Houston

This is great news.  I went to some of the NASH meetings, but real life has prevented me from attending lately.  I always found the meetings informative and well worth attending.

They used to have them at ADG as well as members homes, they were on Saturdays, usually the morning.  It kinda rotated, I think they still do.

As I have a growing interest in designing tanks as biotypes, I appreciate this contact. Where do I find them..do they have a website?

Re: Nature Aquarium Society of Houston

There is not an official website as of yet but now that we are here you can find us here!

The meetings have been Monthly either first or second saturday afternoon of the month. We have been holding the meetings at ADG who has generously allowed us to be there but I think from here on out it will be more meetings outside of ADG whether it be a home or an outside gathering.

Re: Nature Aquarium Society of Houston

One thing I can definitely say about planted tank is there are only pluses when it comes to keeping fish.  In my experience, the fish I keep have been more robust and healthy as a result of plants being there.  When plants are healthy, the fish will be healthy and happy too.  The mortality rate for one has certainly gone down to zero ever since I started having plants around.

All in all, it is a hobby worth going for because you learn many things about many field via this.  Biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, microbiology, to just name a few areas in science that one will come across.
