Mike, you can get away with a lot and not have to use a macro lens. The reproduction on most macro lens is still 1:1 which means what you see in the viewfinder is what you are taking a picture of. What makes a marco lens different is that fact that you can come right up to the subject and still focus the picture and take it. You can get macro looking shots by cropping the image down to what you want.
I think the main difference is prime lens vs. zoom lens. The prime lens is going to have a sharper image compared to a zoom len. But the main plus side to the zoom is just that...you can zoom in and out while standing in the same place. With a prime lens to zoom in a out you have to literally move closer or further away.
