Why the aversion to canon, Mike?

Or do you just like Nikon?

              I don't think the d5000 has CLS.

So no plug and plan on wireless flash. You would have to get a master then the slave, sb-800 or sb-900 with another sb-800/900 or sb-600.

Using flash will bring out nicer colors in the fish and allow you to use a small f-stop. Basically means more of the picture will be in focus.

Main seller on the d5000 is the adjustable LED. Honestly, I don't even use my LED to shoot pictures. I use it to review pictures but not to shoot them.

Also, I thought the picture quality on d5000's LED was not as good as the ones with built in LEDs.

Bang of the buck is to get a used d40. Body does down in value fast. Glass will hold value longer. The new 60mm/2.8 marco lens has built in AS motor so the d40 with that lens will product very clean pictures and work just as a d5000 would.

                    Check out the nikon d200.

Used body could be gotten for cheap.

You can learn a lot off this body before having to upgrade.

You looking for video too or just pictures?

Yeah, that camera has a decent video option on it.

I think the processor is a little slow on it. Like when you click the button to take a picture there is some lag time.

                        Jim's 50d is very fast. Faster than a nikon D90 I think.

When I take a lot of pictures b/c the fish is in a motion or doing an action I want to capture, the tiny lag time is noticeable and bothersome.

I'm using the stock lens 18-55mm for now, very decents pictures IMO but I want a macro really bad.
