General Photo Settings

My photography ability is lacking. Anyhow, can someone give me the general settings for a 35mm camera to take goo betta pictures. I have a cannon rebel XS (I think), 2 remote flashes, and even a tripod. I just need to know what some good settings on the camera should be.

What type of tank is the Betta in? Need to know the tank shape and layout before I can make suggestions..
