  • Breeding Calvus

just wondering if anybody has ever bred a Calvus. I've set all the water perameters and gave them plenty of spots to breed, but no action. Wondering if there was a trick to the trade so to speak.

Well, a lot of it has to do with the maturity level of the fish. They grow very very slowly compared to most Tanganyikans, so the appropriate breeding size would be at least 4-5"+. They also like to breed near and spit their fry into shells, so you may want to work on getting a good amount of them. there's a wide variety of choices here

If you're really trying to focus on breeding these I'd recommend a species only tank to cut out any 'distractions'. After that, just be consistent on your water changes and parameters, and be patient. They'll breed when they're ready.

+1 for Jon.. Now the female usually finds a spot which is narrow where only she will fit into it. She being slightly smaller than the male will wedge herself into this narrow spot and lay her eggs.. the male will then get as close as he can to fertilize.. after he is done he has guard duty as she tends to her eggs and fry.. Like Jon says once the the young are free swimming she will then move them to locations she feels safe at... another narrow place..
