  • Kenyi Fry

Some of my kenyi fry have been dieing. I give them 50% water changes every two days. The water I use to fill their tank up with goes through a carbon filter, and a water softener. I don't check the PH, Amonia, Hardness, etc. because I don't have a test kit. Can someone tell me what's wrong?

    Thanks!

Do smaller water changes. 20% every day is better than 40% every other day. Fry are more sensitive to changes in conditions.

My first guess is water temperature fluctuation. What are you feeding them? What size tank are they in? heater?

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

I'm feeding them crushed up tropican fish flakes. They are in a 10 gallon tank. There is not a heater in there. (I can put one in).

If you have some Prime or Amquel, I would add a little to the tank. Like ATH said only about a 1/4 water change at the time, and temp cannot fall below about 72 or they will die off quick too. I would put a heater in there and raise the temp to about 80 in the grow out tank. Crushed flake should do you fine

I would say that the water softener could be causing pH spikes.
Temp fluctuations would be another reason.
Possible that the carbon filter is not effective enough depending on which kind.
