  • Tropheus chaitika

I have a chance to get 20 f2 chaitika fry for 6.00 each 1.5 inch or 23 kachese fry 6.00 each 3/4 inch. My question is, if I want to get a colony going, do I just throw everyone in the pool and let the males knock off each other and form a proper ratio colony? I read that you should have something like 3-5 males to 15-20 females. How do I form this ratio with 1.5 inch fry? Does everyone get along regardless of ratio if they grow out together?
Which group should I go with?
    Thanks.

which group to go with is really up to your likes/dislikes. I personally just bought a bunch of juvies and I plan on just letting the males fight it out. I really like both of those tropheus.

So do I, that's half the problem.
So you just let them duke it out and last fish standing is the colony?

I love the kachese look. When they color up, they turn a copper color.Gorgeous

i would probably go with the chaitika, just because not alot of people seem to have them.
however, kachese are freaking sweet looking.
so like Newb said, its really just personal preference.

The males will most likely not kill each other if you getting 20 plus. You should grow them out and vent.

What tank size and what filtration do you have?

In these two colonies ratio is not so important. They will do fine even in 1:2 or 1:1 So I would not worry too much on ratio. Its not until 3.5" can you truly confirm the sex with venting. Smaller than that and its a crapshoot.

Both fish are equally awesome fish to keep. Personally I dont like the rainbow types, I think they are overrated, but its a matter of personal opinion.

Typical colony sizes are 20-25 fish, so your covered there number wise. I would shoot for a 125 gallon tank with 10X filtration turnover.

You could be fine with a 75 gallon for about 6 months.

Make sure you get with the seller and find out his water condition ph wise and what food he has them eating. This will make their acclimation much easier, and quicker.

This way you'll know if not eating, its not your food.

Welcome to the site, and the world of Tropheus are extremely addicting fish.

                Be careful..lol...

                Take care,

I was planning on using my 120 fatboy for a colony with 4 box filters from Jehmco as filtration.
I am leaning to the Kachese, but now I have a chance to pick up a proven colony of T. duboisi halembe, 19 adults. Decisions, decisions!

I have both, but the Chaitikas are not fully colored up yet. The orange/bronze color on the Kachese is awesome. Ultimately it is up to personal preferrence.

The majority of the Kachese I have seen looked good, whether in a small colony or large.

The Chaitikas on the other hand have not been as pleasing but like the others have said, personal preferrence.
