Filtration is a huge must on your tank, there is no question about it. If you you can run 10x filtration you are doing good, and then I am going to say using 10x powerhead to get some good water movement in your tank is a must too. I am going to say this. Look at EK's old pictures of his large colony in his 125 and when you turn on the water movement the fish all get together and move in unison and not as much infighting.. just my 2.3 cents

The Kachese are the way to go. I got a chance to pick up a really nice group from phan222001 (thanks bro) and the colors on these guys are amazing.

So you think the 4 jumbo Jehmco box filters plus a good size powerhead would be enough?

The Jehmco box filters are basically sponge filters (if I am reading this correct off their website).. http://www.jehmco.com/html/box_filters.html

However how nice they will NOT do the work. You will need something much more substantial. You said you are going to put them in 120 Fatboy which if I am not mistaken is a 4x2x2ft tank correct ?

I would invest in a good wet/dry system.
You can make your own, check with fshfrk and he can tell you all the items you need. This can be done fairly cheap, or you can contact Delock, he might have a used wet/dry you can get fairly cheap. You will need at LEAST a MAG12 or MAG18 for your system, depending on how big your wet/dry is.

Look at this item from craigslist.

With that all you need to do is get an overflow box and a pump and you are good to go..

Tropheus, like other fish from Tanganyika are for the most part high O2 users, and the sponge filters are just not going to do regarding filtration and water movement. As your fish grow they are going to be quite messy. You need the filtration to be superb.

I have a rapids pro I was trying to sell, but I may keep it for the tank. I have been trying to convert my tanks to sponges to save a little electricity.

              vmahaffe,

A Rapid Pro is it a salt water filter ? Ie does it come with the collection cup ? It will work but you will not be able to use the skimmer portion in freshwater. Besides that you are looking okie with that. You will need use something like a MAG12 or MAG 9 on that unit. Its rated for 700 gph, and I dont know how much its over built, but you should be okie.

I would still look at the filter Specialone812 is selling
HoustonFishBox is an online community dedicated to bringing together people and their fish in Houston, Southeast Texas, and beyond.

And then get a MAG12 with it, because it looks like it can handle it. Maybe Specialone812 can jump in here and say more about his filter, like how big is the bio ball area. A good filter uses 12qt bio filtration per 100g water filtration.

                Well, I missed both groups.
Question is now, what to get next? Any suggestions? What are some of the more desirable trophs in the hobby?
My budget is $150 for a group of 10-20. I am "trying" to stay within budget. What would everyone suggest?

With a budget of only 150, you are best off getting together with someone here in town (on HFB) and getting their fry. Most will sell you desirable F1 fry at around 25 for $150 You want to get a good group going because the more they are together the better their interaction will be and you will over time find less fights in the tank that could come at a loss of fish.

Half my problem is I am not in Houston anymore, so I would have to consider shipping. I know asking $150 shipped for 10-20 would be a little much, so I am giving myself a buffer to cover shipping.
Up here in Minnesota, we have some nice trophs, but I am thinking about looking for stuff not everyone has, like Ilangii, red saddles, Ikola, etc.

algarciajr, I may take you up on your offer if I can't find anything else good. There is a big show in Chicago in a couple weeks, so I am going to look around there first.

vmahaffe, yeah with you not being in Houston that would pose a problem. I dont know many who ships, as its not the easiest and most desired way to go about things.
Like I happen to have access to a box or two, but that would end my shipping capabilities, and on top of that I dont have O2 to fill my bags when I ship.. so I like many others would only sell locally.

Like Jesper(Zulaab) said, not a whole lot of us are setup to ship; including myself.

I was thinking that if the fish were interesting enough, I would call upon my old friend Dan at HAW to throw in an assist on the shipping. He has shipped fish up to me before, including mine when I moved from there to here.

Any recommendations on troph's I should consider getting? What you choose if you could only pick one type?
There is a guy here who is selling his group of 9 red moliro's and 10 simo diagramma for $130. Both groups are co-existing in the same tank.

9 is not a good number.

Honestly on your budget I would try really hard to get fry and grow them out.

Check out the list in the club section because I think Houston has a great variety of tropheus fry to offer.
