flip the fish over.there is two holes close to their anal fin.if the two holes are the same size its male,if the hole nearest the anal fin is larger than the other its female, but if they've never spawned before it can be a little more difficult to tell.

Im thinking about using silica sand that are sold at the pool store but how can you clean it if i use the gravel cleaner they will suck it up?

I use it, and I just turn my filters off during a water change and use my hands to "fluff" the sand a little bit. I then clean up anything that comes out, fill the tank with fresh water, dechlorinate, let settle for about 3-4minutes, then turn the filters back on so that they are sucking up any sand.

With Tropheus Ikola, I have never seen a female with eggspots on her anal fin.

Male Ikola will sometimes have the eggspots, but not always.

With the 30 Fish, your going to need a 6ft long aquarium otherwise, they are going to be quickly overcrowded and stunted if you keep them in the 50 gallon you are proposing. You dont want that.

If you are limited to having the 55 gallon, please put only 15 in one, and then get a second 55 gallon and put the other 15 in there.
