  • Sad day to be a Calvus

Well, i had a feeling my Fronts were about to start being adults and claiming territories, but i didnt think they would pick on the Calvus. I came home last week and witnessed my largest male attacking one of my Juli's and he devoured him in just a few seconds. I was prepared for that, but tonight i came home and my female black congo calvus looked like she'd been put into a meat grinder. She was breathing so i took her out and isolated her in her own tank but it was only minutes later and she had passed on to the giant lake in the sky. Probably the worst fish death i've encountered so far. I love Calvus and she was my first. Anyway, maybe i'll find a good sized one at the auction this weekend to replace her.

Fronts are piscavore -- they are going to be like Oscars.. what will fit in their mouth will be eaten. Cyps are their natural food, and they are nocturnal hunters.
Fronts will grow to 75% of their size in about 18 months, and become sexual active around month 36-40.
I am sorry to hear about your Calvus, but if your fish are getting the size where they are seeing opportunity in eating other fish, there is a good chance you are going to see all other fish that will fit in their mouths becoming dinner.
