  • cyps spawning again

Question for the cyps owners out there that have successful spawning.

My blue flash cyps just spawned again. I watched her drop eggs and grabbing the. (this make one of the most interesting fish to watch spawning I believe).

I am wanting in the next few months (when I have a job again) and redo my 110x-tall tanks which my cyps, xeno's and occies live in (I know the xeno's today are prolly grabbing the babies when they are released.

    1. What do you "as a cyp owner who wants to keep the babies" do ?
    2. What setup would you say is the best setup for a tank where you want to increase the chances of natural survival of the young should look like ?
Right now I am thinking of adding a large piece of driftwood which reaches up in the tank on one side (without taking a lot of bottom space away with a number of tall plants in the background area. Remember I still need to keep my occies, xeno's etc happy :)

    Your comments ?

My cyps are spawning almost constantly it would seem, but I don't have much experience with rearing their young or advice as to what kind of terrain is best for raising fry.

I would imagine, more cover and less preditors would be the key to rearing fry successfully.

I'll be following this thread for other input...

Thanks :) I have almost always a female holding for the last two months, but yet a single fry and I know they are keeping them till release because I can see eyes and everything in the mouths of the fish, but the issue is, there are nearly 40 Xeno's in the tank and I would think almost any food released into the tank they will think its food... until they realize it swims and should not be eaten. This is why I want to rescape the tank and make it so it could happen..

I really dont want to "catch and release"

meaning you don't want to strip and put the eggs in a tumbler?

I think that would be the best thing to do if you want them not to get eaten up.

1.cyp owner who wants to keep the babies=strip the mother.if you want max fry output,no way to get around it.those xenos and shellies,or any other fish for that matter(including other cyps),are gonna get an easy meal when momma spits.i've had lots of groups of these fish over the years.i have netted fry out of a breeder tank ONE time.for the most part, stripping fish is no big deal, like any thing else, takes practice.but jughead, stripping fish is not natural.well, cyps are open water fish, they swim in schools of 1000's.nothing going on in a home aquarium is "natural"to these fish.if you need a stripping lesson, let me know.as far as rearing the young, that can be covered in another thread if need be.
2.best set up to increase chances of natural survival-a swimming pool
              3.good luck,if i can help you,let me know.

                Thanks Jughead :) I appreciate it :) :) :) :)

I am just looking for them to slowly add to their own colony. I might just start having to catch females and put them in a tank where she can spit and noone else will go for them

ROFL -- The Xeno's are awesome... I think you know what I mean..
Yes if I wanted to do this I would have done this a while ago. This tank is more about a community tank more than anything else.
I really dont want to split them up. I do want to scape the tank more because right now its pretty bare, and it needs a lot of things for it to look perfect.. when it happens then I will move in that direction. The occies have really grown since moving from their old 20L which they all stayed the same size for more than a year in that tank. I love the fact the are getting a bit bigger now.

Maybe we can exchange fry as we get further along in the fry count. Fishlady and I have about 20 fry in a baby tank right now....keep in touch with us for updates on how our fry are progressing....swapping a few fish might make our colonies stronger???

                        Just and idea...

That should be possible. My fish are 1/2 from Tattoo and 1/2 from Jughead, but its possible that the 1/2 from Tattoo are also from Jughead, but I cannot verify this.
I will keep you in mind Steve. I am thinking the potential of catching the females and putting them in a breeding tank so I can let her spit out fry or I might be looking to strip. We will see soon what I do. Right now I am working on getting the tank re-scaped for now.

Strip the mommas and tumble them. Use a double screened tumbler. You can buy a good one from jrogo at aquabid. Look at the vid at:

I don't see any tumblers posted, but you can contact him.

After you tumble, you can make a diy floating nursery and place it inside your tank. I like to keep all my fishkeeping to 1 tank.

Check out this link to see my jrogo tumbler and my floating nurseries:

Good luck and congrats on the cyps. They are beautiful fish.
