  • What's the deal w/ Troph's

Hey everyone! I was just thinking about starting another tank, and was just wondering what the deal is w/ troph's? Seems like alot of the more experienced people here keep them....So what's so special about them? I know they are very nice looking fish, but is it their behavior? Are they really aggressive? What is it? Why so expensive? I geuss i'm just lookin for some info on em. It would be great to see a video of some of ya'lls.

Yes, why are they the holy grail of African cichlids and why did mine commit trophicide? Why is there this cult of troph eletists? Why do people go troph and never go back. I'd love to know.

Yeah i hear ya, i've raised Fronts, and alot of the malawi's, but i've kinda been into the CA/SA's for the past couple years. My wife misses the mbuna setup (all the colors), but the troph's are something i haven't tried yet.

For most, the attraction is their personality and or activity level, they have a pecking order or hierarchy that they live by and then there's the joy of having done all your homework and prep work, and finally see your first batch of Troph fry....nothing cutier, than a mini troph poppin in and out of a holey rock being chased by his sibblings. Others find their colors and their "other than normal" appearance endearing.....who knows.... ?

its the face only a mother could love.

They are the perfect little 5" Fish that is just so cool to watch, to keep, and learn about.

Most important really I think, is the sharing of your experince in keeping them. So many others share the exact same thing.

Be Careful though...next thing you know....your house is full of them, and your debating getting rid of your dining room table, your couch, your home stero, and your tv.

                Been there done that...lol....

the "Elite" bs is mostly caused by others who dont like it when people who know what they are doing, will not listen to their advice and claim, you're a know-it-all elitist!!

Why can I mix my Trophs with Discus, and feed them bloodworms...

The Troph Mafia is simple...there are more people here in Houston that keep these fish per area, than any other place in the US. As the best I know, we in Houston are the only Tropheus and Petrochromis Club.

Trophicide is unfortunately a issue that has but one cure....

Trophicide: the useen slaughter of trophs that goes on when the owner is at work and comes home to find the shredded bodies; when there is no visible signs of fights, agression or illness when the owner is present at home.

They are not the holy grail of African Cichlids. There are others that are much more the holy grail. These fish are like B. Tricoti (you will need to talk to Armthehomeless about them) You have fish like P. Bulu Point (dont know who to talk to about them here in Town as there might be less than 10 in this town)

Why Do they commit Trophicide ? You stick to few fish in a tank and aggression simply is not spread even around to everyone. One is picked on until death and then the cycle continue. Or if you dont keep up with your water changes then there is a problem too. (we will cover this later)

Many people who keep Trophs keep them because they are beautiful fish, they are aggressive, but at the same time they are a colony fish with some fairly facinating family structure and lifestyle... Nick you more than anyone else I know should understand, once you change your direction in your life, changing it back would be difficult. Some have just not seen anything else in their eyes and would not want to change.
