  • a few quick TROPH ?'s

well first, i just landed a new job and start next week, so i have money to blow on frivilous crap again

anywho, i have a 75g that origonally had trophs in it.
    i had 19 duboisi 'maswa'
    and 13 chimba in there.

anywho, i think i would like to do trophs again.

    these are the tank specs

    Tank -
    Standard 75g 48x18x20

    Lighting -
    2x T12 48" 40 watt 10k
    i will most likely upgrade to a TEK 48" 4x 54 watt T5 Fixture

    Filtration -
Proclear 75 with Continuous Syphon Overflow
i am gunna run a Mag 7 on this.

my first ? is will this byitself be sufficient filtration for a 75g with ~30 adult trophs?

if not, what in conuntion with the wetdry do i need to run?

i was thinking maybe an Eheim 2028?

    substrate -
well that all depends on what rocks i decide to go with, and that all depends on what trophs i decide to go with.

    background -
will be black or blue, again depending on what trophs i go with.

    heater - Jager 250watt

    now, for the main questions.

what trophs from the following list are the rarest?
but that i can also get from a local source.
this local source will more than likely be txtropheustraders, as i refuse to pay the insane f'in prices at ultimate fish

    heres the list -

    Tropheus sp. "Black" (Mabilibili)
    T. Brichardi Malagrasi
    Tropheus brichardi (Mpimbwe)
    Tropheus moorii (Kiku)
    Tropheus moorii (Linangu)
    Tropheus moorii (Murago)
    Tropheus moorii (Muzi)
    Tropheus sp. "Red" (Katete)
    Tropheus sp. "Red" (Kipimbi)
    Tropheus sp. "Red" (Lupota)

I REALLY LIKE THE LUPOTA ALOT!

not sure on the rarest one...but I believe he listed Kiku would be possible on this order and maybe murago too. I know for a fact that cichlidandherps has muzi available as well as linangu. good luck.

        I would not do 30 adults in a 4'.

Lighter substrate brings out the color in trophs a lot better than the dark stuff.

Filtration on a 75 -- 24 fish max, 75 pro/clear and some other filtration means needed.

I am rating these fish as not rare to really rare (and unknown) based on how often I see them available from dealers around the country.

Tropheus sp. "Black" (Mabilibili) -- rare (Geoff says Extremely rare if true WC)
          T. Brichardi Malagrasi -- dont know (ie I cannot find anything about them) (Geoff says this is the rares to get)
          Tropheus brichardi (Mpimbwe) -- rare
Tropheus moorii (Kiku) -- really rare (seen them only available outside the US lately)
Tropheus moorii (Linangu) -- not rare (seen all the time)
Tropheus moorii (Murago) -- really rare (seen them only here and there, but not often.)
Tropheus moorii (Muzi) -- not rare (several places have had them)
Tropheus sp. "Red" (Katete) -- rare
Tropheus sp. "Red" (Kipimbi) aka. Tropheus moorii "Chipimbi" -- not rare
Tropheus sp. "Red" (Lupota) -- rare

I would ask Mike (bethesdaboy) on his opinion too. He knows a lot about the rarety of each fish out there.

I would not put more than 12-20 adults in a 75 gallon tank.

If your looking for a throw down setup, then (2) AC 110's on a 75 gallon is the way to go.

The MAG 7 you haVE gives you the 10X turnover, but it is always better in my opinion to have (2) filters on a troph tank.

This helps you in doing larger water changes, and helps keep the O2 up with more surface agitation.

If you have to be limited by the 4ft wall space, get a 120 gallon 4x2x2 or the 140 gallon 4x2x30in these tanks will give you so much more options and room for 30 adults.

be careful..trophs are addicting as all get out..

It all depends on what you are classifying as rare.

Wild Tropheus sp. "Black" (Mabilibili) are extremely rare, but in pondraised are very common fish.

If you want rare all the way based upon your list, I would get Malagrasi.

There is not anything in pondraised out there, and very seldom in wild caught.

                up the filter game.

20-25 max depending on size. I think you can go 25. I don't expect the fishes to be 5-6 inches. And you will lose a few.

Like geoff said, Mabilibili is rarest if true WC. Kiku is rare. lupota is not rare. they been popping old world's list among others.

I know the Muzi is not super rare, but I never seen them and via pictures there is a lot of variation. I would love just to look at them and see why people call them charry rainbow. Got to be nice.

ok, heres the thing about upgrading to a 4x2x2, i have always wanted to, but the distance from the wall is just to far, the only place ican put the 4x2x2 is next to the 125g, which puts the 75g right up against the closet door, i cant have another 6" overhang, or i wont be able to open my door.

i will however up my filter game to the pc 75 w/mag7 AND 2x ac 110 hobs:)

an i will probably end up disregarding the whole rare troph thing and just get what i enjoy seeing the most, which is probably gunna be a colony of ~15-20 T. Sp Red Lupota.

i dont know why, but the Lupota just stand out for some reason, i really really like them.

also, with the output of the mag 7 and the 2x ac 110's, should i still get some added circultion to help curve aggression?
i was thinking going the EK route of complete flow overkill and putting 2x maxijet 1200's with that mod that gives them each 1600gph.
one at each end of the tank.
                        what do yall think?

That actually maybe too much. Like sand flying everywhere too much. More flow is good, but you don't want it too directed. Even with the eco-mod the maxi-jets flow is relatively narrow.

You want a lot of flow but spread out. Maybe one tunze nano stream modded.

I would dump the HOB and get a canister. The bigger the better. And in the canister world eheim is king.

ok, so a modded tunze nano stream, like the one ek sold several months back?
i think it was like 1100gph.
anywho, a canister, wll, being a 75g tank, the stand doesnt leave alot of room to work with, would a Eheim 2028 work ok in conjuntion with the pc 75 and mag 7?

if so i will need to get

                            Mag 7 Pump
                            Eheim Pro II 2028
                            Tunze Turbelle Nano Stream
                            Eheim Jager 250 watt Heater
                            ~60lbs. Sugar-Sized Aragonite Sand
                            100+lbs. of Rock

i figure i can find everything but the sand, rock, and heater FS on here or marshreef.
so once i have everything and the tank cycles a bit, i will go buy a kickass group of ~15-20 Lupota

IF the wall space is a issue, definately want to ditch the HOB filters, this way the 120 4x2x2 will be closer to the wall.

The 2028 is a nice filter and with the wet/dry your good to go.

you want to spend the money on a tunze go ahead. Its the best equipment out there.
