  • Straining Play Sand?

I decided to grab some play sand for my new tank, not even thinking to check the grains. So I get it home and discover that the grain sizes are mixed more than I'd like, and the only thing I can find to sift it to the size I want is a small kitchen strainer that holds about 1/4 cup. I have 150lbs of sand.

Am I nuts for considering straining this sand? Should I return the play sand to get something else?

    Return it.

    Get this:
    Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

yup it has much nicer color too, more white.

Make sure you wash the sand so it doesnt cloud up too much

I'll like the whiter color. I might not be able to get it until tomorrow. How white it is? Bright white or light tan or ??

I'll wash it well. I have several buckets just waiting for it.

Sounds like I'll need to repaint my plastic grill. I painted it so it wouldn't be too obvious when the fish expose it with their digging, but I bet the color I have on it is too dark now. Oh, well. At least painting it isn't all that hard.

Play sand may contain fungicide which is lethal to fish. Don't do it! :icon_hang:

Whoa! I never knew that! Thanks for the warning.

I'm going to go ahead with pool filter sand. I'm already extremely exhausted because all of this stuff is so heavy, and I just don't have the energy to strain the sand even if I wanted to. Plus, it sounds like pool filter sand is closer to what I was wanting anyway.

                        +1.

I've never rinsed it on any of my tanks.
