What I have experienced so far, is that the absolute best in color and breeding occurs when one colony of 25-30 fishes exists in a 125 gallon tank, with nothing but snails or plecos as tankmates.

Agreed 100% as reflected in my post found above.

IF your looking for diversity the breeding will be reduced somewhat to A LOT depeding on what and how many "others" or even another Tropheus colony you add.

In your 5ft tank, I would not put more than about 20-25 fish. I have 26 in 115 gallon same as your tank, and it is crowded. I think about 5 less fish would be perfect, but you need to consider agression.

This is a general statement but there are other things I would like to add. 1) If the fishes are smaller you can pack a lot more into it. I've had 60+ in a 75g no problem.

              2) I think it's highly possible to put 25-30 tropheus in a 5 footer. If there are a lot of females to about 4-6 males then the colony would work nicely.

              3) Geoff always thinks his tanks are crowded b/c he has the largest tropheus in Houston! If you get f1 or average size WC then it's not a problem.

Certain variants are a lot more agressive than others so your going to want to keep the numbers up.

              Which variant are you considering?
When increase number of fishes, you need to increase flow. By having your water constantly moving, you increase the surface area of your tank. The layer in contact with the air is always changing and consequently you dramatically increase the rate at which oxygen can be dissolved into the water, and carbon dioxide is released from the water. The surface area of your tank is always the limiting factor in the number of fishes you can keep in a tank. So, by artificially increasing your tank’s surface area, your tank is then able to house more fish.

I have some Tropheus Moorri Moliro in my 125g with 9 Frontosas, 2 adult Calvus, 8 Brichardi, 3 Juli's, and some Syn Cats. They all mingle really well together. Good luck with your new project.

Would a Trophs tank look more natural with gray rocks or brown rocks. Thinking about creating a background with fake modular rocks.

                                Depends on the fish.

I think my namansi look better with the brown rocks.

You want to get some rocks that will contrast with the fish.

Knowing what you want Jason, I would get a lighter looking rocks. Dark rocks will make most Rainbow variants look too dark, and they will not show off their color well.
