      What happened, Z?

I will post some pictures in a little bit of the parents and offspring, but I'm stumped. The woman who feeds these fish and I were talking today, and she said, "Oh, you gotta come up and see these babies. I know you think I'm crazy, but I really think they're a mix." So I said, "Okay, but I'm telling you, it can't happen..."

Half an hour later I was taking pictures with my blackberry while choking on my foot.

          Ok...where?

I just never thought it was possible. I'm uploading the terrible pictures into my photobucket account right now. :)

It happens ALL the time. A lot of the "yellow labs" sold in chain stores are lab/zebra crosses.

Thanks, Fire_chair! This is news to me - I had no idea.

Does this ever happen in the Lake?

I realize that may be a really stupid and uneducated question, but I was just always taught that the definition of species (roughly) was a group of organisms able to interbreed and produce viable offspring...Viable being the key word. So, ergo, two separate species shouldn't be able to produce viable offspring...

What a world! Mine is so upside-down right now. :icon_hang:

I caught my Kiku male successfully get a female Chilambo to lay eggs for him.
Everytime I had seen spawning attempts.. it never went further than a few rounds and she would run off...

Now I have gone though my tank over and over again in the last 4 months and I have yet to ever see a baby in there... and I figure it was that he never got a chance to have her lay eggs.. now I have seen eggs.. I know he has fertilized them.

                          1. I am wondering if the eggs mature out or not.
                          2. If so then I wonder what they will look like.

                          3. I have made up my mind. If I get this job starting Tuesday I am not going to have a day to do this until I come back, but when I do come back then I am going to break down the 180 and the 70.

All the fish in the 180 are out into buckets, seperated Chilambo and Kiku.
Then all the fish in the 70 dub maswa are going into buckets.

I am going to drain the 180 completely. Redo all the rock work (I am not happy with it in the first place) and I am going to put a small child to work.

Once redone and all setup.. return the Chilambo and Dubs into the 180 because Geoff swears they will not interbreed, and the Kiku go right back into the 70. They can live there until I have enough money to buy a 215 or 7ft 210 to take all my xeno/cyps/occies and put them in there.. then the Kiku will have the 110 for themselves..

                            1. I think the eggs will mature. Sp. red is notorious for cross breeding when kept with others.
                            2. Me too but what a dangerous idea.
                            3. Good idea. Dubs, annecten, and polli are going to be your best bet for a troph mix that will not cross breed. I have only read of one reported case of a dub cross breeding with another type on trohps.com and that person couldn't provide pictures so I can't say 100%.
I ate my fish that died.
