  • Featherfins

i finally got my other 75g setup, its cycling and by Friday it should be ready for fish.

my first idea for it was a second colony of trophs, but now after looking at pics of various featherfins online, i really like how they look!

i have a nice colony of trophs already, and want something alittle different.

i dont know alot about featherfins, so i need healp with the following.

    1) some suggestions on what sp. to keep

    2) what if any sand dweelers can i keep with them, ie; xenos, challichromis, ect...

    3) what basic scape/decor should be used to ensure a natrual, yet appealing environement.

keep in mind its a 75g.

also, i have had cyps, and paracyps, so those are a no go.

i really liked the looks of nasutas, ventralis, dewentii, and foai.

    aswell as xenos, and callochromis.

Im about to move my nasutas to a new 75 soon. Once I do, i wanna get some biparental xenos like spiloterus to go with them. I think this combination of fish along with alot of open sand without too many rocks could be a good setup. Now I am also a beginner, so don't hate me if I'm wrong.

      Too small for foai/ furcifers.

Open sand is key. You'll want to set up the tank the opposite from trophs. Two open sand areas on the sides and a rock divider in the middle. Keep in mind the aforementioned featherfins dig sand pits just like the xenos do.

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Ok, I was thinking it might be small for some of the ff's..
Would a trio of ventralis and like 6-8 - 2m6f xenos be ok?
Also, what type of rock would you reccomend?
I like the black magma rock, aswell as mexican river stone and the slate newb has.

I will take our the holey rock and replace it with something else.

I like the sp of Nasuta you have riftjunkie, but I have always wanted a group of ventralis.

Again I am going to say the same as everyone else.
Ventralis it will be to small at 75. You need a 120 (48x24) to keep em as a min and at that point you can keep 1 male.. They dig a 60cm (24") round plate as their spawning size. In a 6ft 180 you can keep 2 males and in a 7ft 210 you can keep 3 males.. You can keep as many females as you dare cramp in there, because they school tight.

Xeno's.. you want to keep them in a 1:1 ratio -- they pair up during spawning season and then they share the work. In a 75 you can keep maybe 3:3 or 4:4....
I would not keep Xeno's and Ventralis together, why because they will attempt to destroy the males work and he will not stand it and there will be a fight.. and I dont want to see one or the other lose.. if you get my drift... Get some shellies or else go to the fish you dont want again.. You cannot put anything in there where the Ventralis believes its not king.. you will never get to see it color up if you do put something more aggressive than he is.
